Man plays music. Dog barks. Man chokes dog. Dog bites man. Man stabs dog. Man arrested for aggravated cruelty to animals.

Not quite a Darwin award winner, but one to watch.

A Utica man faces a felony charge after Utica police say he stabbed a pit bull several times in the mouth area. Brenton Browne, 26, was charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, police said Thursday.

Browne was charged after police responded to a Gray Avenue residence Monday regarding an animal cruelty complaint, and said the incident started when the dog would not stop barking because of music that was being played loudly.

The suspect then started choking the dog, which then bit him, police said.

The dog’s owner then took his pet to another room of the house, where the suspect allegedly stabbed the pit bull...


Not quite an accurate headline, but there it is. I don't wonder why they wrote it that way as didn't it lure all of us in to reading the article?

A pitbull would have to do more than bark at me for me to stab it, but if it bit me, or one of my family members, you can bet that I would be willing to stab it in self defense. I love dogs, and would do whatever I could to prevent that last effort, but I would not have any beef with doing it if it were necessary.

If some dickhead attacked my pit bull with a knife it would take me a lot longer to maim them than if I had a gun, and I'd enjoy doing it.

Even if your dog attacked somebody's kid? Good to know you'd turn into not only a killer, but someone who maims their victim as well....

Why do we not refer to these animals by their actual breed name? They are American Staffordshire Bull Terriers. It takes some of the inflammatory connotation out of the name, and may permit more reasoned discussion.

Now we have to be PC when referring to these animals? Get the hell outta here.

Yup. We get a lot of pitbulls through the shelter. At least 2 a week. Liability means we can't adopt them out, so if they're strays after 5 days they're put down.

Like yesterday, we got in a pitbull with ten puppies that were owner surrendered. We managed to get space for three of the pups in a PB rescue group, but that was it. The rest were euth'd immediately.

Sometimes I hate my job. The pits we get in are some of the most sociable dogs we have. I haven't seen an aggressive one yet. We have a big red nose pit right now that will just follow me around when I'm cleaning the ACO building. Until Monday that is.

As much as I'd love to volunteer at a shelter, I don't know if my heart could take it. Plus, I'd probably have 50 dogs at home. I donate money, and I have donated time to helping get some pups adopted, but being there knowing so many will be put down would put me in a deep funk. So glad that there are people out there doing it though.

Since we're the city's shelter, most of our volunteers are people looking for community service hours for court. 

Which was nice today since I didn't have to wash all the dogs in the adoption room.

We have an 11 year Norwegian Forest Cat that if it goes on the list, I don't care what my property manager says, he's coming home with me. He's quiet and mellow, so I can hide him if I need too.

Fortunately, as long as we have space, we don't euth adoptable animals. Some shelters in the DFW area give a set time, then that's it.

I know space is a huge issue. I give my money to the only local no kill shelter, and they were almost done for. Thanks to Facebook really, they were able to get enough donations to keep on going. But then I remember that the shelters that do end up euthanizing need money too, so I try to help those as well. I really wish people would adopt their pets instead of spending mega bucks on them. It is a personal choice, and I try to remember that, but all my pets are adopted. That is the only way for me. And we will always have pets, so when my oldest goes (and the time is near), we will go to KARA (the no kill shelter) and pick out a new pup. Probably an older pup this time. One that looks unadoptable. All I care is that they are loving and friendly to people and especially kids. I don't give a flip what they look like.

Thanks for what you do. I think it is so important.

DUmmies must love animals (including muzzies) more than humans, I guess....

All my pets are shelter pets except for this last dog I found at a pet store.

We walked in to buy pet food  and in big box I saw the strangest dog I have ever seen.  A Brussels Grifon.  The little girl was just sitting in a corner with the strangest face, nose pushed in like a pug and hair almost covering these beedie big black eyes. She for all the world looked like a grumpy old man.

You must know how love at first glance goes be it a car, boat, person or camel, we left but I could get that weird face out of my mind.

She was only 3+ months old and darn her face resembled a Monkeys face.

We went back and I paid a huge amount of money, for us, got her papers and registration for the AKC and brought her home.

Looking over the papers I found I had bought a dog from a Midwest puppy mill.  I went on the internet to see what she would like as an adult----max weight was 8 pounds size was about 6-7 inches, no problem then.

Today the pup at 8 months is about 14 inches tall and weighs around 15 pounds.

Yes we got snookered by the breeder not the pet store, the dog is a pure breed but in no way acceptable for the show ring.  We paid show prices for her not at a pet price.

Would I be willing to surrender the dog to the breeder, and get my money back---
I would cut my arm off first.

Looking back the only advise I can give to anyone who wants to adopt or buy any animal is to get one that is at least 6 months old. Puppy's are oh so tempting but that 4 pound ball of fur you thought was a toy dog may as they age tip the scales at 40 pounds.

When we purchase a house, we are going to adopt a dog from one of the shelters in the area.  I just cannot spend $3,000 on a dog.  My aunt bought a purebred basset hound for BIG BUCKS from some breeder in PA.  She drove from WI to PA to get a damn dog and spend so much money on it.

My aunt also spents the mega bucks on her dogs. She has Bichons and Labradoodles. They are all wonderful and cute, but no cuter and wonderful than my mutts. In fact, I wouldn't trade my dogs for hers any day. I understand wanting puppies. I LOVE puppies, even when there tear up your house. My last one ate my entire couch. And I am not kidding one bit. But for those that want pure breeds, there are rescue sites for all of them. Just sayin'. I am off my soapbox now. Maybe.

I have a norwegian forest cat.... at least that's what I think she is. I got her from the pound 15 years ago.  She's a beauty and has the sweetest personality.
Here's her picture. Her name is Macy, and although I love shopping as much as everyone else, she's not named after the store- ha. Someone asked me that last week.

If my husband hears that, he will go running away!! lol! I am known to bring home animals. Any animal. I do call him and let him know ahead of time, but I really don't get his permission. Wrong, I know. He knew this about me waaaay before we married. If I didn't have a baby, those doggies would be mine. Now I have to be more careful with my bringing home animals. We've decided (he decided lol) that when our 11 year old doggie, who is not in the best of health, goes, we will add to our pet family. We have 2 dogs now. We had 3. One died while I was pregnant. We have a fish aquarium full of fishies. So, I compromised with him that I wouldn't bring home any animals while we have the ones we already have. However, when we do add to our pet family, he is dying for a Boxer. Rescue of course. But I am pretty adamant about a Basset. I am just guessing that I will win out!!

I hope those babies find a good home.

He is to me. One of the girls I work with can't get near him. He doesn't like her. But she's a dog person anyways. I like both.

I have 2 dachshunds:  Jake and Kinsey.  Both spoiled rotten, both are our children now that the house is (usually) empty.

We had a Basset a couple of years ago, named Delilah, but we got lymphatic cancer and we had to have her put down.   
I called her my "big ol' lovable lump"
