DUmmy Question
« on: July 15, 2010, 10:21:35 PM »
I suppose I can delete the thread after the question is answered, but do any of you know where I can find the Top Primitives of every year since the "Top Primitives of '??" was formed? I would just like to be able to refer to it. They all seem the same to me right now. Some worse than others, but still; I'd appreciate being able to sort out the worst of the worst.

Thanks.

Don't delete this thread, sir.

Others might be wondering the same thing, and so it's needed for illumination.

I was just thinking that same thing, franik. (And the fact that I may need to keep it straight from time to time. :-))

I've seen the name change thread before. I just had trouble finding the history is all.

Side Note: Wee Willie Pit seems to have made the Tops list for the majority of the time it's been around. Too bad he won't be making it anymore.

And I too cannot believe that little miss Piggy hasn't made the list. 'Tis an outrage.

PS Frank: Part of the reason I created this thread was to get the specific, and unique names our mods/admins have given to the Top Primitives. Is there a list somewhere?

I'd like to have it stickied as well. The other one I'd like to have saved for posterity is a thread Ralph did a looooong time ago when we were at our old home. He'd gone through all the nutcases in "the reality based community" documenting those that thought they had some kind of supernatural power...being able to travel around outside of their bodies, talk to their goddesses, etc. I laughed so hard at that one I cried. Just stunning.

Frank: Part of the reason I created this thread was to get the specific, and unique names our mods/admins have given to the Top Primitives. Is there a list somewhere?

I was away for a couple of days; sorry.

I assume when you say "specific and unique names," you're referring to monickers such as MRS. ALFRED PACKER or DOUG'S STUPID EX-WIFE or OSCAR WILDE, THE LARGE-PROBOSCISED PRIMITIVE or PEDRO PICASSO or THE BIRD-SMACKING STONED RED-FACED PRIMITIVE or THE ANTI-OSTEOPATHIC PRIMITIVE or EARLG, LORD MARBLEHEAD or &c., &c., &c.

The Bostonian Drunkard, the unappellated eohippus, my fellow alum Skins, the subway cat, &c., &c., &c.

Those are nicknames for particular primitives I create myself, and anyone else is equally free to do so.

I started doing this a few years ago when I found the official primitive screen-names lacking in imagination and devoid of any hints about what the primitive is like as a person.

And some names the primitives name themselves are just downright stupid.

So I re-baptize them.

"sfexpat2000" was just a bunch of vomited random letters and words; "Doug's stupid ex-wife" gave her a persona, gave some depth to her, gave the reader an idea of what she is really like.

The first "alternative name" I created--and I still consider it my very best creation--was "Fat Che," for the "benburch" primitive; that was a very long time ago, at our old home.  I don't think I've ever topped "Fat Che," when it comes to giving a clear concise "picture" of a primitive.

Some of the re-names are no-brainers, such as "Mrs. Alfred Packer" for the "hippywife" primitive or "Pedro Picasso" for the "Atman" primitive or "my fellow alum Skins" for "Skinner" or "the defrocked warped primitive" for "warpy."  Those re-names came to mind as easily as strawberries-and-cream.

Some primitives are difficult to re-name, though; for two years, I've wrestled with what would make a more realistic name for the "tularetom" primitive, one of the most selfish, greedy, and hypocritical primitives on Skins's island, and I still haven't come up with anything even remotely decent.

Jut because I give a primitive a new name doesn't mean it's a top primitive, or even a PoP (Primitive of Prominence); there's plenty of obscure non-PoPs whom I've re-christened.  It means only that I've been able, through the comments of a particular primitive, to discern something special about a primitive, something that sets a primitive apart from all the other primitives (the unterprimitiven, the faceless lynch mob, the amorphous blob, that is 99.9% of Skins's island).

I suppose I'm trying to "humanize" individual primitives, to differentiate them.

The anthropologist Margaret Mead did the same thing.

If anyone ever wants to know the origins of a primitive re-name, one is always free to ask.

Yep, that's what I meant, Frank.

A list of your creations corresponding to the primitive would be nice just so I (and new members can familiarize themselves. Plus, when I wish to quote one of them, I can refer to this thread. :)

The names are always changing, though.

For example, Mrs. Alfred Packer, the "hippywife" primitive, used to be called "Grandma."

That was back when I really liked the "hippywife" primitive, and there's probably hundreds of threads scattered throughout conservative cave from that time, where I was more than fulsome of praise for her.

But then late last year, Grandma betrayed that she's under the thumb of Wild Bill, the "hippyhubby," who wouldn't let her do Christmas.  Grandma tried making all sorts of excuses, alleging it was her decision to not do Christmas, but she was overly effusive in those excuses, insisting it was her choice.

That rang hollow.  What woman doesn't like to do Christmas?

It became obvious that Grandma was under the heavy thumb of Wild Bill, and that it was okay with her, that the crusty old bone-chewing curmudgeon dominated her.

How could one possibly respect anyone like that?

And so "Grandma" became "Mrs. Alfred Packer."

The names are constantly in evolution; I think I've used at least six for Doug's stupid ex-wife, and four for Pedro Picasso.

And now we got the "bobbolink" primitive, who used to be the bobbling primitive, but now she's re-baptized as the Nemesis of the Bostonian Drunkard.

And yet Beth always reverts back to "Doug's stupid ex-wife- the DUmbest person on the internet".
