School and Working full time
« on: July 05, 2010, 11:39:27 AM »
So, I'm probably coming off as a complete flake here, but I think I've decided that I want to get a nursing degree. There is a college near by that offers an accellerated Master's Degree in Nursing for non-nursing majors that I'm really interested in, so I've decided that since I've gone back and forth about nursing since I was 18 I'm going to go ahead and take the pre-requisites for the program.  I will probably have to quit my job for the actual nursing program, but I need to stay employed for the pre-reqs.  For those who have attended school while working full time, what is a realistic amount of classes to take.  I suspect that I am being overly ambitious because now that I've made a decision I just want to get them out of the way.  I'm considering two evening classes (Monday through Thursday nights) and two online classes.  Will this kill me?

No.  It won't kill you, but it will kill your social life and hobbies.

12 hours was real do-able when I went through occupational therapy school, worked 32-35 hours at a real flexible job, and raised three kids without welfare or child support.  Some semesters were 15 hours and I got through them.  One semester ended up being 18 credit hours with 6 weeks of a weekend statistics class.  I also moved the family the weekend before finals, and ended up needing IVs to finish the semester.

I did all my cooking on Saturdays for the week.  Every "break" I got my research done for upcoming papers.  Yeah, I lost weight, too.

Every time I weakened I remembered a friend asking, "So what will you do tomorrow if you don't go to class?"  Didn't have a good answer.  Also put a big sign on my wall in front of where I studied that just said, "Keep you eye on the prize."  Meant something to me.  Find what means something to you.

You can do it.
