Oh my.

Given that "jobs" seems to be the primitive topic de jour, I thought I would check the "jobs" forum on Skins's island, to see if it's still infested with killer cobwebs from lack of use.

I think I've screwed myself over big time

Basically, I've pretty much stuck to doing short-term project based work as a contractor(IT stuff) Which I thought was awesome because I would be able to work for a few months toward something tangible, and then I'd be done with it and could find something new. Now I'm thinking I want something more long-term and stable, but it seems my project based work isn't real employment to most. I'm trying various ways of formatting my resume and whatnots, and that seems to help me get an interview (sometimes), but it nearly always comes back to the lack of any solid career that lasted more than a year (last long-term job was not related to IT and back when I was in school in the early 2000's)

Anyone else get into this position before? Any ideas on how to get out of it? I'm figuring maybe I'll get lucky and just going for short-term projects until I get lucky... I suppose I should be lucky I have any job these days, aye?

Yeah, in the 0bamareich, one's lucky to have any job these days.

Although one doesn't know too many presidential golf caddies who are on the unemployment rolls.

1. i wonder if a portfolio of your work could get you past that hump.

The above's the whole campfire, as the "jobs" forum on Skins's island remains neglected and unused.

The "getting aboard the government gravy train" forum however is really busy; practically a traffic jam there.

I'd be interested to see what kind of education or certification programs the DUmmy has obtained in the last couple of years, particularly since they work in IT.

In this DUmmies shoes, I would probably reformat the way I was framing my work.  Focus on the previous items from a project management perspective instead of merely a freelance code writer.

He really needs to be up front about looking for a change of career direction instead of trying to make his record look like something it's not, and then ending up just making himself look like a big phony.

I was a contractor in health care for 10 years.  Once working three at the same time.  Always got letters of recommendation before I left in case the staff changed.  Which it frequently does in health care.

Now I have a staff position, because I want it.  Never had a problem.  But, IT may be different with "this economy."  I know some engineers who are sure smarter than me and they are having a tough go of finding permanent work.

On a related note, over the weekend some radio talk show was talking about the 99 weeks unemployment.  The host thought it was ridiculous.  A few callers called in to say, "hey, I paid into it, I'm gonna take all I can."   I got to thinking, what in the world does this look like on a resume?  Talk about screwing yourself over big time.  A 99 week gap in a resume is going to look exactly how it's going to look.

Circular file.  Even if you do get an interview, it's going to be mighty uncomfortable explaining away that huge episode of funemployment.

Perhaps this idiot, rather than listing all his previous employers first on his resume, lists his accomplishments, then lists who they were for.

Just a suggestion.

On my resume, I always listed the results of my employment, such as contruction of: Wallly World, Shopko, Home Depot, Target, Safeway, Albertsons, Burger King, etc. Then list what companies I worked for in order to complete the projects. I've never been turned down when looking for a job unless we couldn't come together over the cash they were going to fill my pockets with!

I think I've screwed myself over big time

A DUmmy's REAL job hunt:

Interviewer:
"DUmmy, tell me about your work history".

DUmmy:
Who me?

Interviewer:
Yes. Read your resume, please!

DUmmy:
Uh, I don`t have it finished yet.

Interviewer:
Well then, read what you have, young man!

DUmmy:
Okay. The first day on my vacation, what I did on my summer vacation, the first day on my vacation, I woke up. Then, I went downtown to look for job. Then I hung out in front of the drugstore. The second day on my summer vacation, I woke up, then I went downtown to look for a job. Then I hung out in front of the drugstore. The third day on my summer vacation, I woke up...

Interviewer:
Now that`s fine, young man!

DUmmy :
...Then I went downtown to look for a job...

Interviewer:
Now that`s fine, young man!

DUmmy :
...Then I got a job, keeping people from hanging out in front of the drugstore. The fourth day on my..
