We’re losing out to some of the dumbest people in the world

Whether we are up against Tea Baggers, Dittoheads, Beck followers, Palin worshipers, or the rest of the mindless wingnut establishment, there’s a fact we have to face. We’re losing almost every battle we fight against people who aren’t very smart.

My (non-scientific) observations seem to indicate that most DU members possess above average intelligence. And with no solid data to support my position, my guess would be that overall, the majority of Democrats are more intelligent (or at least spend more time thinking for themselves) than the majority of Republicans.

So if what I’m stating is true, how come we lose almost every encounter we get into with them? I know they have better propagandists than we do. I know their propagandists have no principals. And I also know that the mainstream media will echo any piece of insane crap they toss out there.

Nonetheless, how can we be losing to some of the most uninformed, mindless people in our society? And by losing, I’m not just talking about elections. Almost half the people in this country are either not interested, not paying attention, or are consistently opposing their own interests. To put that more bluntly, I’m talking about thoughtless people who are dangerously dumb enough to bring about their own destruction. As well as ours.

So here's my question. Is there anything we can do about it?

5. The democrats need to be united than the bickering I often hear. The democrats need to stop caving into inane republican interests thinking somehow the republicans will cast a vote with them. Somehow the democrats need more of a voice in MSM. The RW nuts have pretty much taken over a lot of religion, AM radio, FM radio (here) which RW nuts listen too, and a fair amount of MSM borders on RW IMO. The democrats are perceived as weak and spineless by their constant appeasing to republicans.

IMO democrats are kinder people that are often attacked by RW bullies who are belligerent and bellicose individuals by nature.

IMO the democrats with majorities did a grave disservice to the cause by not having made full use of those majorities and plowed forward. Instead they were more like social workers trying to get the republican vote.

7. They are smart at bending public perceptions.

And Dems, for the most part, seem to not know how to fight Repub propaganda.

There is a contingent of the populace that feel, thanks to Repub propaganda, that anything Dem is un-American.

They destroy labels like liberal, and then attach those labels to their political enemies.

They wrap themselves in the symbolism of ideals most Americans share - the Bible, the US Flag, and these days the Constitution, and define themselves as protectors of these ideals while claiming their political opponents want to destroy these things.

They are, as you term them, unethical propagandists.

I think the answer as to why we seem to lose to them is because, as much as they pump this crap out into the national discourse, we Dems have not, after all these years, found an effective way to fight back and counter it. It amazes me that Dems seem to be repeatedly caught off-guard by such tactics. Over and over again. We allow the repubs to define the debate, define the terms of the debate, and then try to claw away at the false perceptions we allowed the repubs to propagate - the health-care reform debate being a prime example.

Note from franksolich: there's a problem with this tale.  That Adlai Stevenson was never a senator; he was a governor in 1952, but I dunno if he was still a governor in 1956.  Probably the primitive was thinking of his son, another Adlai Stevenson, who did become senator, when making up this story.  But at any rate, the idea of the Democrat candidate for president in 1952 and 1956 being an intellectual has been pretty much demolished as of late.  The guy was a no-brainer.
