Road trip.....they're off.
« on: July 02, 2010, 03:43:01 PM »
Son's Scout Troop left for Philmont N.M. at 5 am this morning. They will take 7 days going out there for sight seeing. Their first night (tonight) is in Nashville Tn.. They're going to eat in some fancy resturant and go to the Grand Old Opry. Tomorrow it's St Louis and trip up in the arch and then on to ???? some other town im Mo. for the night.

I can't remember all the things they're going to see and do but some highlights are the Grand canyon, 4-corners, and Las Vegas...........that's Las Vegas N.M. right near the camp they're going to. ...and then they will backpacking/camping for 10 days and take a different route home for more sight seeing.

The boys were grinning from ear to ear this morning and all the mom's were either crying or looking very sad. It's going to be a long month around here....even for me.
I think what happens is that the mom's realize their babies are beginning to look and act like men.

Well, I got an e-mail from the scoutmaster and things are going well. They're on schedule so far and having a good time.

Friday night was Nashville and the Grand Ole Opry.

Saturday they toured the Gateway Arch and Lewis and Clark Museum in St, Louis.

Sunday they hit Dodge City KS., had church service and experienced Dodge City as seen on Gunsmoke...I don't what that means and I doubt most of the kids have ever seen Gunsmoke.

Monday they arrived in Canon City CO. and toured Bent's Old Fort. They can see the Rockies now.

Tuesdays destination is Cortez CO.. This morning they will be spending time in the Royal Gorge Park and then a scenic drive to Cortez.

Wednesdays destination is Gallup NM.. They're going to visit the cliff dwellings at Mesa Verde National Park. Then it's the 4-corners where they can be in 4 states at once. Then visit Shiprock on way into Gallup.

Thursday is a driving tour of Old Santa Fe, then to the Albuquerque airport to pickup a past Eagle Scout member of the troop that's joining them their....and then to the motel in Las Vegas NM. and their last nights sleep in a bed for awhile.

Fridays destination is Base Camp Philmont Scout Ranch.....and 10 days of backpacking.

Fantastic trip!  how old is your son and how are they traveling?

The Scout Troop owns 2 vans and a enclosed trailer. There are 7 in each van, 5 scouts and 2 adult leaders. 2 more adults are flying out to meet them in NM.. The troop is split into 2 crews for this trip. The Scout Masters select a crew leader for each of the 2 crews. The crew leader then selects an assistant. Each crew has one Boy Scout as crew leader and another Boy Scout as his assistant with the Scouts totally in charge. The leaders do the driving and that's it, period. The crew leaders handle the money, decide where they're going, what they visit, make sure the other scouts behave. This is supposed to be a character/leadership building trip as much as an adventure for the boys. The Scoutmasters laugh and say that this is there vacation where for a change, the boys wait on them. At Philmont, the Scouts have to have adult leaders along with them on the trails but the boys are supposed to run/do everything.

My son just turned 15 a month ago. He's the leader for crew #1. He's 6' tall and 200 lbs. so they gave him 2 of the youngest and weakest Scouts. They all have to be 14 years old or older and meet certain other requirements to go to Philmont. All these boys on this trip are 14/15 years old. The youngest bunch they've ever had without any older boys in the mix.

Their old former Scoutmaster is on this trip (72 yrs old and stepped down late last year). He swears this is his last Philmont trip....of course that's what he said 12 years and 3 other trips ago.

36 years ago he took over the troop as Scoutmaster. The troop had always been known as one of the best in the district but it was also one of the poorest and worst equipped. He changed all that. Under his leadership, and using his ideas, the troop has raised funds for the purchase of a house for a meeting place, bought excellent equipment, vans, trailer, canoes, etc.. When he took over he made the boys a promise. He promised that he would do his best to see to it that they could all take this trip every 4 years. He promised every boy that ever joined the troop that if they worked hard and stuck with it they too could go to Philmont. They have an auction once a year, sell Christmas trees in the fall and do other things to raise the money for these trips. They keep an account for each boy and most of them have more than enough money in their account to buy the personal equipment they need and pay all their trip expenses.

Most troops meet, tailgate camp and go for a week of summer camp. Our troop is known as one that does things. They do something at least one weekend every month and the boys are required to make 75% of all meetings and weekend events. They go  backpacking every other month in between those trips they rock climb, canoe, etc.. They did a lot of 3 day backpacking weekends this spring leading up to this trip.

JR, this troop sounds fantastic, and what a Scoutmaster! Has he earned his Silver Beaver yet? If not, I'm sure he will.

I never made it to Philmont and the "other" high adventure Scout site, but I spent several years in Scouting as a kid and later as an adult.

This is exactly the kind of thing that boys need - getting outdoors and doing stuff. Put the Xbox and the cell phones away and get cracking with some serious outdoors activities.

Best of luck to your whole troop, JR. Sounds great and I'm sure your son will have a blast.

That is awesome!  My Uncle worked many a summer at Philmont, and my Granddad worked in the Medical Camp for a brazillion Jamborees.  Not really a brazillion, but a lot.  He will remember this trip for years and years.  What a great opportunity.

Eupher...Yes he has his Sliver Beaver award. I had to wait until the wife got home to find out.

IassaFTots...Say your uncle worked there. That must have been great. I looked at your profile, Texas I see. On their way home they're supposed to spend the night in Amarillo. Says they're going to eat supper at the "Big Texan Steak Ranch". Is that the place with the huge steaks that are free if you can eat it all?...after 10 days of trail food I foresee some sick Scouts in the near future... :-)

Conservativemobster...Yes, I'm proud of the boy. Ever since he joined the Scouts at age 11, the Scout leaders have called on him quite a bit and have expected more out of him than the others. They had a large group of Cub Scouts (eleven) move up at the same time as my son. From those eleven there are only 3 left. The others either quit Scouts altogether or moved on to easier troops.

They have one stop on the way home that I just don't understand why they put it on there list....the museum at Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City.

Yup, that would be the place.  Never been there myself, but I hear it is a trip.  The steak place that is.  My Uncle had fond memories.  I happen to be in possession of his badge sash, and his Order of the Arrow band.  My Grandparents were very involved in scouting, and ingrained in us the importance.

As far as the museum.....well, it might be for teaching a lesson on vigilance, perhaps.  I don't know.  When the Holocaust Museum opened, my Dad took me there, so I could be a witness.  He believed that if you were a witness, then you had a responsibility to make sure to be vigilant.  Not a bad lesson to learn.

My son was the first in his little group to go through the OA ordeal. He made brotherhood as quick as possible and got a couple of gold pins for his OA sash for something. Last month they made him District Chief. He hopes to make Vigil by next year if not sooner.

I've been wanting him to go ahead with his eagle project but he's been dragging his feet. I may have to give him a boot in the...uh...boost this winter.

I just got an email from the Scoutmaster. It appears that he typed it up last night and just today found a spot where his laptop worked. They didn't get to do the 4-corners, it was closed for construction. He says all the boys were like "WOW" at the Royal Gorge National Park.

I think I detected a note of disappointment in the Scoutmasters email tho. Normally for weekend trips and summer camp the boys aren't allowed to have cell phones and any electronic game/music stuff with them. They must have relented on this trip. The Scoutmaster says that they are staying up late at night watching TV, then sleeping on the van or playing electronics games instead of looking at the scenery. My boy took a MP3 player for music along but that's all. If I find out he's one of those not taking in the sights as they ride along, I'm gonna slap his jaws.

The boys will be spending tonight in a motel and be checking into camp in the morning. Son is supposed to call collect tonight so momma can make sure he's doing OK.

Damn.

This business about "hotels" or even "motels" bugs me a bit, although I realize that these guys are traveling and not static at the moment. It takes a lot of work setting up a camp just for an overnight, then tear it down again the next day. Okay, I get that.

All the same, when I was a Scout there was no such thing as a "motel". If you're on a campout, you're on a campout.

I won't even go into the cell phone, ipod, xbox, 3dhorror-of-horrors, and mp3 stuff.  :censored:

And yes, I was an Eagle Scout and I still remember how to tie my knots, not to mention how many dozens of miles I'd walk to and from school every day.  :lmao:

yeah, I realize that. Back a few years ago when I was an assistant Scoutmaster of the troop I belonged to as a kid, we did the same sort of thing (though not nearly as long).

From Michigan, we drove out to Gettysburg, PA. That was a day trip, but we also went down to D.C. and spent some time "camping out" in a gymnasium on Bolling AFB.

I guess it's just a sign of the times.  Sigh.

Hey Eupher, I'm in S.C. and it's a long way to NM. from here. The Scoutmaster has more ...uh...more...uh...lets just say he's doing something I wouldn't do with or without the pacifiers. They're staying in motels so they can see more museums and things along the way. After tonight they'll be camping for the next 10 days and then 3 days and 2 nights on the road.

While typing that I was interupted by a phone call from my son. He was on one of the other boys cell phone. He was in a Burger King in Albuquerque, NM.. He's loving this trip and he's been wide awake and taking it all in. He did say he'd rather be back in the mountains of Colorado though. He sounded very 'up' and excited by it all. Says he's looking forward to hitting the trails at Philmont. I told him to call back in a couple of hours so he could talk to his mother.

...and he's had a first on this trip that I didn't realize he'd have. This is or has been the first time he has ever stayed in a motel. It has either been condos at the beach or camping before this trip.

Well, that makes things a bigtime adventure. And I did catch your description upthread about the 10 days of backpacking.

I guess the difference is, we never would've gone that far on a campout, even summer camp. We stayed pretty much in Michigan or in Canada - everything accessible in a few hours on the road.

I honestly hope he has a blast. Maybe I'm just a bit jealous...Philmont. Never made it there, though I'd often thought about it.....

He's enjoying it..."It's been a blast so far." "That was awesome." "I love it". "It's all been fantastic". "It's beautiful"....language he doesn't normally use.

I asked him how the smallest one in the bunch (momma's boy) was doing. Son says, "Oh, he's being his usual whinny self but he'll live....I'm not going to let him die and get out of it that easy."....my son has spent to much time around me. :rotf:
