I woke up deaf today.

I have had Meinere's disease since I have been 15. For the last 13 years, I have been deaf in my left ear. I am also afflicted with tinnitus in that ear. All day, every day, I hear a high pitched ringing that never, ever stops. It drove me insane at first. Now I only notice it when it is very quiet.

Which it now will be for the rest of my life. This morning, I woke up deaf.

I am devastated. I just started an MBA program 3 weeks ago. I don't read lips nearly well enough to be able to keep up in classes. I don't know any ASL, so an interpreter is out. I am going to have to quit the program and go back to working a minimum wage job. That is, if I can even find one. In this economy, who is going to hire someone with a profound disability when there are so many able-bodied job seekers?

I haven't accumulated enough work credits to qualify for Social Security disability, and even if I had, there is a six month wait before you can even apply for benefits. Even if I were to start getting disability checks tomorrow, they top out at less than $1000 / month, which is certainly not enough to live any kind of decent life on.

I feel like my life is over, and I'm not even 30 yet.

What  a DUmbass. Poor, poor little ole me. There's just so much wrong with this crying in my beer post.

I'm absolutely terrified right now. How will I use a telephone? I'll never be able to use a drive-through anything ever again.

And music. I don't know if I can live without music. I'll never be able to hear my flute again.

What the hell is the point of playing an instrument you can't hear?

I'll never be able to find a job, not without being able to read lips.

I am so, SO ****ed.

Please find someone who will treat you at a reduced fee. I'm sure there is someone out there and it would be worth it if they can restore even partial hearing. Don't give up!

34. There is no treatment or cure for Meinere's disease.
   
The only treatment is a labyrinthectomy which stops vertigo attacks but also causes permanent deafness.

I might be a candidate for cochlear implants, but that would be years down the road.

Ask Rush. I'm sure he would he glad to help.  :evillaugh:

38. I have a friend who said that he would take me to the ER.
   
I'll worry about the bill later. If there is any possibility that my hearing in my right ear can be restored, I'm going to find out .

We all know what that means. I ain't gonna pay it.

87. Yes he can my son has been on SSI since he was 18.
   
it is not easy a lot of paperwork, so an advocate would be helpful to him.

I'll bet the kid is healthy as a horse.

YOU WILL LIVE! It's very hard but, you can do it. Mine started in my early 20's I have 2% hearing in one ear. Use CC TV, emails and text msg, fax instead of phones.

There is technology that wasn't around when it happened to me - not that, that's going to make you feel any better but, it will help you feel less isolated.

Find out about a University Medical Center is your area.

I'm not going to bullshit you and tell you to take it easy, relax, etc. You can be pissed off and mad as hell just take a deep breath and get your gloves on you're in for a fight. You're a Democrat for chrisakes, that says a lot about you.

I never learned ASL, I lip read. Before there was CC which is the only thing I'm grateful to Poppi Bush for is ADA I would watch TV with the sound off. It's hard if their back is turned but, then with CC I'm doing great.

I went to Duke in NC last year for a cochlear implant. Two months later I was diagnosed with Cancer and hearing lost it's importance. I'd rather be alive than hear.

Mrs. Tantal has an aunt that's blind as a bat.....and has been since she was about 5. She's managed to get a Master's Degree and has a very good job. Of all disabilities that people have to overcome....blindness, paralysis, spina bifida, etc, it seems that deafness would probably be the easiest to overcome.

Thing that gets me is that he's working on his Masters. He has a degree in some field. Why can't he get a job in that profession? Unless he's a sound tech for the democrat party, testing obama's teleprompter.

So glad you saw this Frank! It's the first thing I thought of when I read the title.

Everyone I know with a disability has worked thru it and got on with life without a handout from the damn government! I work with a guy with muscular dystrophy. He has a full time job and still drives himself to work everyday! It's a little difficult to understand him until you get used to his voice, but the guy is an expert in the plumbing department. He has regular customers that refuse to be helped by anyone else.

I read these woe is me posts from these lazy asshats, and the only thing they can come up with is, "How do I get a hand out?", not how to get a "hand up".

****ing disgusting! But then again, I always use that word when discussing DUmmies!

Well, that's what I'm wondering about.

The execrable primitive alleges to be under 30, but he's probably close to 30.

He's had 10-15 of his life to work, to earn those social security credits (I have no idea how much it takes, but it probably doesn't take much).

What the Hell has the execrable primitive been doing the last 10-15 years of his life?

Well not to be too much of a bleeding heart, but I can understand feeling this way at first. It would be a shock. Granted, you can't make it a lifestyle but I'd give this one some slack for a bit.

The thing is, his very first reaction, besides the shock, is-how can he get a handout. All other options are dismissed out of hand, as if no other options even exist. As another dummie said, he's a democrat, that says it all about him. The movers and shakers in the rat party have worked for decades to instill this very mindset in their serfs, and here we have an example of how well it's worked. "Fight", my eye, his very first instinct is to be a victim and to predicate his future on that idea without even weighing other options.

On the bright side....maybe the ER docs can just irrigate that earwax ball that's causing this consternation.

Meinere's is typically associated with one ear.  I am afflicted with this disease.  Where's my check ?!

As an aside here: is madmax a mole?  I found his post to be a slap and hug....not the typical dummy response.

If I read his plight as written Cin, he was aware this was a definite possibility. If that is the case, doncha think you would work on your sign language, brail, and lip reading before this occurred? Sounds to me like it was inevitable and this idiot just ignored it, or procrastinated to the point of negligence!

Hard for me to have any sympathy for someone who refuses to help himself. God helps those that helps themselves. Heard that somewhere before, course, a DUmmie has more than likely never heard of something so simple.

I woke up male today!  I don't know what I will do to survive.  I have never in my life peed standing up, I have never had to deal with balls!  My whole body is covered in hair.  I am going to have to drop out of society and have the government pay me to live this way.  I know there is NO WAY I could ever learn how to be male!  I need to just give up and be pathetic.  No one in the history of the world except me is male now.  No one would ever hire a male!  WOE IS ME WOE IS ME!!!!!!!! :thatsright:

Leftist Agitator would also do well to find a different support group than the DUmp.  I know he wants to go there to find out how to get free money, but this is not his biggest problem.  Besides, if you read through some of those diability threads, it's pretty damn hard to get the free pony, it takes a long time, a lot of red tape, and several rejections.  Even if you get it, and there's no guarantees, the money is paltry.  You are on poverty subsistence. 

I'm not going to feel sorry for anyone who names themselves "Leftist Agitator."  Bah, go away.
