A Butte County delegate to the state Republican Party convention in Idaho Falls on Friday got his compatriots on a committee to go along with the plan - at least on paper.

The notion had been floated during the three-day convention in Idaho Falls, an extension of the anti-Washington, D.C. sentiment here that bubbled over.

Advocates said such a force could assist with natural disasters - and wouldn't be subject to a military call-up, like the Idaho National Guard is now.

The recommendation called for Idaho's governor to form a panel to spend a year drafting a militia plan.

But concerns about costs that might arise from such an organization, should it actually be formed, prompted a majority of the more than 400 delegates who weighed in to turn the resolution dow

They're talking about a real State militia that is not Federally-recognized and integrated into the Army, like the New York Guard (Not the NY National Guard, which IS subject to both State and Federal callup; I believe some other states have them as well, Georgia did at one time but I don't know if they still do) which is subject only to State callup, not some bunch of freelancers that don't answer to anyone but themselves.

I grew up in Idaho Falls (1965 - 1985), and I can proudly say I left many "scars" on the land from my many peek-up trucks, motorcycles, stereos, GUNS, and keggers!

I.F. is Bonneville county though, not Butte county. Butte county is Arco, ID, where I lived for 9 months back in 1965. Arco is the very first city in the WORLD to be powered by nuclear energy using the Experimental Breeder Reactor 1 EBR-1.

Get outside of Boise and the state is probably the most conservative in the country.

And I say that having been to prototype in IF (S5G, aka "the ketchup bottle") and living in the Bear Lake Valley (Montpelier/Dingle) as a kid, and IIRC Dad (or his wife) still have some land up by Soda Springs.

Texas has the Texas State Guard, which is not subject to Federal Govt intervention. They report to the Governor ONLY (through their chain of command). They are ALL volunteer and don't get paid anything for their service, not even mileage to & from appointed place of duty.
