For that matter, Jimmuh Carter had his own situation with MG (Or was he a BG?  No matter) Singlaub in Korea, firing him for lipping off about what a FUBAR job Carter was doing.  Which he was.

This article from POLITICO discusses just that:

..."But it may actually be more comparable to a more chronic presidential leadership crisis — Abraham Lincoln’s dilemma during the Civil War, when he was forced to repeatedly reshuffle his general staff in the face of vacillating public opinion, insubordination and, above all else, uncertainty about how best to win a bloody war he couldn’t afford to lose."

This is a fairly good article and I did not realize how messed up this war is.

Looks like 0bama needs another day on the golf course and a White House rock concert.

When faced with no support or very little from your CIC and now it looks like some backstabbing as well from his former boss ,what's a person to do when the Chain of Command is broken?  Looks like a No Win situation for McChrystal no matter what path he chose. If I didn't know better it soundslike they wanted it to happen at the WH just so they can justify thier actions.

Several points here:

--WTF is ANYONE in uniform doing talking to anyone from Rolling Stone?  Seriously?

--Incredibly poor form for a general officer to discuss who he voted for.

--Wasn't it the liberals who kept telling us that, "dissent is patriotic?"

--Obama can't be bothered to talk to McCrystal for 4 MONTHS regarding additional troops, but the second he hears anything negative reported about himself, he hauls him back the NEXT DAY?

--Falling on his sword or not, McCrystal screwed the pooch badly, and needs to go.

Maybe General McCrystal likes attention.

                  RECIPIE FOR DISASTER

Take a bunch of the Brass so frustrated they are having a collective nervous breakdown.

Mix in one reporter who is sympathetic to their needs and tells the Brass what they dearly need to hear.  Becoming an ear for them to vent to, agree with them and UNDERSTAND their problems.

Add in a few drinks just to loosen up with the fellow think alike Brass, include the New Friend who has been trust worthy in the past.

As long as the reporter remains silent and just records their conversation, the Brass soon forgets he is there.

Fold in more drinks and or more bad news about the state of the Country or the new body count for that month, bad family news from home, personal problems and exhaustion, physical and mental.

Bake in 900 degree oven for a month or so.  Remove from oven and apologise for the mess in the pan.

You know, if Obama was going to fire the general, he could have done that over the telephone(radio/whatever).

I think it's all about the Big Zero's ego. He wants to cuss the general out face to face, show him who's boss. The Big Zero must look down his nose at the underlings.

Que the Mussy-leany picture.

Nawww history says Commanding Generals need to be recalled home, dressed down then fired/resignations accepted to look tough and in charge. Since zero is all about appearance he'll do what his predecessors did in the same situation.

Amazing how the media had no problem with Current and former Generals saying things like what McChrystal did and worse about President Bush.

GEN Shinseki...MG Rhamey...GET McCaffery...all over the MSM bahing the President's war strategy...and especially critical of the 2007 Surge.

Obama is supposed to be on tv @ 1:30 ET time..2 minutes...to announce what happened.

ABC reported a few minutes ago that McChrystal was relieved of command. Diane Sawyer started with he resigned, but she only said that once. Every other comment was "relieved".

I'm confused....

Doesn't actually matter one way or the other, Deb.  I expect 'Relieved' is correct, though.

He was probably relieved of command and directed to resign (or retire) his commission.

Diane Sawyer is back on and said the "White House is saying that McChrystal resigned".

Obama is on. He just said McChrystal "resigned" as command.

Does that mean he has resigned from the Army also?

He will probably be forced to retire, IF he's lucky. It would be the same thing as a resignation, in all essence.

I believe it goes as Relieved from Command, and a Retired Commission.  Meaning he ain't in the Army no more.  But I could be wrong.

I would guess it does not mean he actually resigned his commission, rather that he resigned the position rather than be relieved for cause.  I'd expect him to retire speedily.

Doesn't sound like he's resigned his commission.

Yet....

Will he be brought up on UCMJ charges?

I don't think the US has actually court-martialed a general officer since Billy Mitchell, deb, there really isn't any realistic chance of that happening.  The closest he could possibly come to UCMJ action would be an Article 15 (And the information released so far hasn't produced a decent case for even that), which is a slap on the wrist compared to being booted from command.

If I remember correctly...wasn't there a 4 Star Wing Wiper that was recalled to active duty and Courts Martialed over perjuring himself over an affair he had with a staffer?

I thought they dropped him a star over that one.

I think he got a 15 and an administrative rank reduction (Service Secretaries can determine the highest rank in which an individual 'honorably served' and change the grade downward, paying retirement on that lower grade; a rarely invoked power, except in cases of disgraceful conduct by senior officers), rather than a CM.
