Rahm Emanuel expected to quit White House

Rahm Emanuel, the White House chief of staff, is expected to leave his job later this year after growing tired of the "idealism" of Barack Obama's inner circle.

Washington insiders say he will quit within six to eight months in frustration at their unwillingness to "bang heads together" to get policy pushed through.

Mr Emanuel, 50, enjoys a good working relationship with Mr Obama but they are understood to have reached an understanding that differences over style mean he will serve only half the full four-year term.

"I would bet he will go after the midterms," said a leading Democratic consultant in Washington. "Nobody thinks it's working but they can't get rid of him – that would look awful. He needs the right sort of job to go to but the consensus is he'll go."

An official from the Bill Clinton era said that "no one will be surprised" if Mr Emanuel left after the midterm elections in November, when the Democratic party will battle to save its majorities in the house of representatives and the senate.

We shall see.

Bingo.

I don't think Rahm will resign...rather, if he does, it won't be because it was his decision.

He's not going to leave that "inner circle". He doesn't strike me as the type to give up on his agenda..which may be why he gets booted out.

The others in the inner circle, will be doing whatever they can to keep Obama and/or the Dems in the White House in 2012. If the majority perceive Rahm as a liability...he will be gone.

Just hand over the chocolate...back away slowly...far away....and you won't get hurt....

Save the Earth... it's the only planet with chocolate.

Nah.  You can be totally unqualfied, moderately dishonest, or even outright obviously incompetent, and still get elected President, as long as you have that winning personality thing going for you.  'Totally unlikeable snake in the grass/foul-mouthed weasely little back-biter' just won't play as a viable candidate's persona, though.

They're already setting the spin up for November.  They've seen the polling numbers.  They've got a far better idea where they stand in the mid-terms, and they know they're going to get slaughtered, losing the House, and possibly even the Senate, or very close to it.

Hi,

I have always looked at Emmanuel as a thug and a crook more than an idealist.  To me he never gave a damn as much about the issues as compared to how much money could be skimmed.

Bingo.

Hi,

In the local McHenry, IL paper today the headline is about Emmanuel and his relationship with Blagoivich.  It could well be what comes out in the testimony is what will do Emmanuel in.  Sure hope so.  Emmanuel is one of the best arm twisters in DC and both democrat and republican congressmen alike flat do not like him for his tactics.  Maybe the administration realizes that after the election his skills would not be needed and likely bring more of a backlash than anything.
