NJ naval base locked down; spokesman won't say why

June 21, 2010 11:47 AM
Associated Press
LAKEHURST, N.J. -- Officials have locked down a navy base in Lakehurst, N.J.

Senior Airman David Carbajal, a spokesman, says there were several "incidents" Monday that he is not yet able to provide more information about. Carbajal says no shots were fired.

That's all I'm going to post, as the story is four paragraphs long.  Plus, the byline.

Now known as the Naval Air Engineering Center, one of its main missions relates to the equipment used to launch aircraft from carriers at sea.

Only thing I can think of is it's an engineering thing.

"Airman" is a what the sailors who work on aircraft are called.

My son was an "Airman" which is why I know. Thor was too, though they had different type jobs. Thor worked on the planes themselves, my son worked only on their guidance/radar systems.

Turns out to be a Fed Ex delivery driver tried to make a delivery packin' a gun. He was cited and released, the lock down was lifted. This is from ABC News Radio.

Heard it on a news break during Rush.

Didn't even notice that! The Navy have Airmen, too! Doesn't have anything to do with the AF.

Fort Dix, McGuire AFB, and Lakehurst are all mutually-bordering and operate as a sort of combined installation, it is possible the spokesman was USAF, but hard to say.

An "Airman" would NEVER be the spokesperson for ANY Navy facility. Besides, the Navy doesn't have "Senior Airman" as a rate/rank name. The USAF does. I still find it odd that the USAF would allow a Senior Airman to be any type of spokesperson. Typically those jobs are for Senior Enlisted or Junior Officers, at a minimum.
