My aunt bitched me out and deleted me from her friend's list on Facebook (pass me a tissue while I bawl my eyes out) because my status was telling people that they are NOT independent if you are accepting government assistance.  I was watching a news interview on television and made a silly comment about the people on it.  She got upset and thought I was talking about her loser daughter.  She told me to stop with the drama and leave family alone.  She also told me not to assume she is taking government assistance.

My first reaction was "what the hell?"

My next reaction was, well, maybe it's true that her daughter (my cousin) is taking government assistance.  I simply told her that not everything is about her daughter.  Mind you, I haven't talked to my cousin in almost two years because she made fun of me for having a miscarriage back in 2008. 

This all happens a week before we fly back for my daughter's first birthday.

She (my aunt) claimed I was reading my cousin's facebook and that I should stop being so negative.  Please, can someone save me from the drama my family stirs up.  Then they all wonder why I moved so far away.

I have NO idea. When I asked her mom about it, all I got was basically, "Aren't YOU the dumbass, don't you even recognize Eminem"?? I was like, Oh great, that's what I get for being a concerned dad. I'm hoping for the better from my daughter but my expectations are low because her mother has turned into a whore. Really, I thought that I had raised her better than that.

I'm familiar with Eminem's older stuff.  It's still kind of an odd thing to post on Facebook without an explanation.  It looks really bad.  I have almost all of my family on my Facebook to keep them updated with my daughter.  I don't think I could ever post any song lyric that said something like that since it can be taken a different way.

Thank YOU!! Had she included quotation marks and attributed the author, I would have thought nothing of it. IMO, it just made her look bad (and me, tangentially). I was ashamed of her and for her.

I did a presentation for 89 highschool girls on internet security, with Facebook being a primary topic. I think I learned more than they did, to be honest. One of the things I took away from it is that most of them (the young girls) don't even think about the completely lack of context or privacy. They laughed when someone else posted something that others could see, but didn't align that with their own posts.

I'm not a parent, and I can't relate. There's a new "generation" out there, and (my interpretation is that) they seem to lack understanding of context... One of the reasons I do not like social networking sites.

There is a lot of that stuff you will see on Lamebook.com or failbook.com.  Most of it is just really stupid comments, but some of them made my jaw drop to the floor.

I did the same for personal use and another for business contacts on Facebook (our store is not quite off the ground yet, so I'm just adding friends as I go).  There are people I worked with that I do NOT want to have access to my personal FB account.

I realize that the internet offers people a certain anonymity, but seriously, why do people do and say things that they would not normally do in real lie or to someone's face?? Do people have that much built up angst and aggression that they need to lash out at another behind the perfect safety of their keyboard??

One never knows what or when you may say innocently that gets you into a bag of worms.

Hubby and I were visiting my daughter when her father and new wife showed up. All went well until we heard yelling and commotion in the street.

I looked out the window to see a young man perhaps 12 years old having a conniption outside.

My daughter told me the boy was weird and uncontrollable.  The night before I had seen a documentary about children born with that alcoholic fetal syndrome and asked my daughter if this parents drank allot.

 To my distress both my EX and his new wife advanced on me , got in my face and yelled at me to shut the FK up.   They were both in raged and I am sitting there not knowing shit from shinola.


How was I to know the EX's new wife lost her twins because she was a drunk years before.?  How was I to know both boys had mental problems? 


BTW both boys did come through with flying colors and graduated from high school, due to living not with her but their father.

Thor, bud, there are countless examples of kids putting up unquoted quotes or movie lines as their status, with parents absolutely freaking out on failbook and lamebook.  Some are quite the riot    Just remember, her intended audience for all those shenanigans are her school friends.

That seems pretty rude. I probably would be inclined to not invite her to the next family function unless she apologized.

At a young age, true--unfortunately, there comes a point where they're going to ask why certain family members don't take the same interest others do.

It's kind of hard explaining the concept of jealousy and selfishness to a child.  Tragic, actually.  But you are right in that we can only do what WE can--you can't make others show what they 1--don't want to, 2--don't likely have for themselves in the first place.
