Oh God Bless.   :banghead:

There used to be a dude sitting on the same corner of NW Hwy and 35 in Dallas.  At this intersection there was a beer store, and a McD's.  His sign said "Will Work for Food."  I bought him a sack of Cheeseburgers.  I was so danged proud of myself for doing a good deed.  (I believe I was somewhere around 24-25ish)  That damn man threw that sack at me and told me he didn't want my stinking food, he wanted to buy his own.  Which, later I was told, meant he wanted it to buy beer/smokes at the beer store.

The ONLY place around here that we see the disabled/homeless people begging for $$ is walking distance to the closest beer store.  I highly doubt that is coincidence.

Oh man- that has happened to me too. It sucks, doesn't it?
I got cussed by a panhandler the other day. I was going in CVS when he asked for money. He was all, "God bless you lady- could you help me?". When I said I only had a credit card, his demeanor immediately changed and he told me "that shitty excuse gets old." Hahahaa.

I'm pretty surprised to see a conservative post this.  I say this respectfully, that is what I would expect to see posted at the DUmp.

If someone is homeless they should use every penny they get to first feed themselves and second to do whatever they can to improve their situation, I can sympathize with those people only.  Anyone who takes earned money and blows it on booze and cigarettes is a dredge on society.

They should instead be focused on more long term goals, start small and do what they can to make things better in baby steps, once they get to a point where they can buy booze, smokes or whatever the hell they want on their own dime, then good for them.

This is what makes capitalism so great, no rewards for slacking like you see with other economic models.

I am a conservative, but I also grew up poor, and I know what it's like to be hungry, to be down and feel no matter how hard you work you're always going to be struggling, some of us can get past it, but there are people out there who can't mentally do that. At least I had a good home life and work ethic to fall back on which IMO helped me to be able to get through those hard struggles, but not everyone can say that. There are people who've gone through horrific abuses in life, some can get past it and others can't. When I signed up as a Republican at 18 I didn't check my compassion and humanity at the door. I have no love for people who are healthy and try to con the system, but I do feel bad for the few that can't get on their feet and have no hope left.

Good for you for making it through the struggle Bally.  I myself haven't been truly poor but did live paycheck to paycheck for a good period of time, worked my ass off with little reward at a company, didn't waste any resources on booze and smokes and instead began to save for school, moved up the ladder, and am now being groomed to take the highest paid position at that company in about a year.

If you truly work hard you may be struggling for a while, a significant period of time even, but you won't be homeless.  Anyone (assuming they are physically capable) can "mentally do it" with enough effort.  If you are homeless and take money and blow it on booze you are obviously not trying hard enough.  The mentality that some people just can't do it is what ends up enslaving people to a life of poverty instead of allowing them to continue to struggle until they do something about it.

When I signed up as a Republican at 18 I didn't check my compassion and humanity at the door.

Me neither.  I have loads of compassion for those who try relentlessly to improve.

"Pull yourself up by your boot straps" is a liberals worse nightmare. It's more damaging than light to a vampire. Say it at the DUmp and you will get raked over the coals.
Come to think of it, unions do create jobs. Companies have to hire two workers to do the work of one.

Now see, that wouldn't bother me in the least.  If he had a sign that says, "I want some booze and smokes"  I would have been happy to assist.  but don't say "Will work for Food"  then get food, and be all ungrateful for it.

I was leaving work downtown a few years ago and saw a guy with a sign that said something like "Who am I trying to kid, I need money for booze!"  I appreciated the honesty, although I was going too fast to stop.

Nice, for the price of two McDoublels (a dollar each) the OP probably reduced that person's lifespan by several days, or at least added to the likelyhood of the rest of us picking up the cost of their future angioplasty. I say give them raw corn, they can shuck it or f*ck it.  :evillaugh:

Had a guy on a trike run out gas out front yesterday. As "Toots" had put the last of mine in her ridin' lawnmower, I gave the guy a ride to get some. He wanted to give me $20 for the ride! $20! I told him naw, not necessary, I might run outa gas someday and need a favor, too!

That's as close as I can come. We donate to the Church and the food bank. If I see somebody lookin' for a hand out, I offer 'em a job. Not had a taker yet!

I bought two double cheeseburgers, had them put them in separate bags, put a banana in hers with napkins and some ketchup, handed it to her, smiled and said, "Enjoy!"

Mickey D has BANANAS??????
Oh didn't you know that?
On Wednesdays if you order two Skittles craping unicorns you get a free banana. It's a special DUmmy bouncy meal deal.

I guess me giving them the look of death, snarling "Naww man, get a ****ing job!" Is heartless and out of line then.   :innocent:

I often give the homeless cans of soda or bottled water. Nice people leave soda for me in mailboxes on hot days, but I don't drink it - so it sits in the car until I give it away - sometimes to one of the kids, or sometimes to a homeless person at a stoplight.

And they have never been refused.

Has anyone from DU ever offered you a place to stay? I would think you get some offers from a forum with compassionate progressives, this isn't freepville after all.

I applaud your relentless passion for this topic.

Not a word yet on this from the DUmp!

32. Thank you, Stephanie. It comes from the deep pain of experience and I wish it would be heard more.
If more people were willing to hear those of us who LIVE this stuff, rather than taking the word of the "experts", not only would there be more understanding, but I believe the whole situation would change.

Otherwise, its wait until the preponderance of the population experience this horrendous stuff!

Does anyone not question this woman using a computer, having an iphone, and saying she's homeless?

At the DUmp? Of course not. She's entitled to those things as payment for the horrible way she's been treated by our corrupt-ocracy out to steal as much money as possible from the working class.
