Painter Thomas Kinkade arrested for alleged DUI
« on: June 14, 2010, 09:52:55 PM »
This isn't particularly one of the most egregious facets of Dummyism, but at least to me it's always been one of the most strange. I'm speaking of course of the exceedingly odd DU obsession with Thomas Kinkade. I've seen many threads over there about him over the years, all of them hate-filled.

Sure, a lot of his art is schmaltz-y, and perhaps more than a little kitsch-y, but so are Hummel figurines, poker-playing dogs and velvet Elvises. The thing is, I don't know anyone who has such a level of vitriol for the purveyors of those objets d'art as DUmmies do for Mssr. Kinkade. They can't even muster this much outrage over child-murdering terrorists:

Painter Thomas Kinkade arrested for alleged DUI

Famed Placerville-raised painter Thomas Kinkade has been arrested for allegedly driving drunk outside Carmel, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A Monterey County sheriff's deputy initially pulled over Kinkade's Mercedes Benz for a vehicle code violation Friday night, said CHP Officer Robert Lehman. After making contact with the 52-year-old Kinkade, the deputy suspected that he was drunk, Lehman said.

The deputy called the CHP to assist, and an officer performed tests to determine that Kinkade was impaired, Lehman said. The CHP officer arrested Kinkade just after 10 p.m., Lehman said.

1. Not much light in the drunk tank, I'd think.
I doubt he'll be inspired by it.

2. I guess one has to be really drunk to paint the crap that he does
He should have stayed from behind a wheel and got back to his imbibing while in front of an easel.

27. Every time I saw one of his "pictures" I would
also expect to see the ****ing Brady Bunch come skipping out of the little rose-covered cottage being all cheerfully clueless and everything. Especially Marcia, whom I always wanted to slap silly. Just because.

Anyway, I've always felt that in creating the crap he did, he must have been trying to cover up something very dark and creepy underneath that he was too ashamed for others to see.

I actually like some of his prints. They evoke memories of a simpler, more innocent time. Certainly not the kind of stuff I'd fill my house with, but maybe something for a child's room, or to set out at Christmas.

I think that's why the DUmmies hate him. They hate him for same reason they hate and mock anything or anyone wholesome, traditional, guileless - because their own lives are such absolute horrorshows of envy, hate and depravity they can't stand to be reminded someone else's might not be, and if there's any one thing DUmmies want it is for everyone to be as miserable as they are.

I can't speak for any other part of DU other than the lounge when it comes to Thomas Kincade. It became a joke at first that took on a life of its own. Someone posted a Thomas Kincade painting, and it really became about something other than Thomas Kincade. Kinda like the Olive Garden did in DU. It started pretty innocent, but it went crazy. Not sure how it flowed over into GD, but there you go.

What happened with the Olive Garden?

It was actually from something stupid. Someone was going to New York and asked for some good Italian restuarants. Someone said to go to the Olive Garden in Times Square. I think it turned into a flamewar about Olive Garden being good Italian. Ever since, it has been a huge joke at DU.

Olive Garden is to Italian food what Taco Bell is to Mexican food.

I've never understood how that POS restaurant can stay in business.  Idiot tourists.

I've never been to one.  But, their commercials show a menu that's just unappealing to me.  Everything is coated in that Alfredo sauce, everything has Italian sausage in it, it just seems like you'd gain 10 pounds in one sitting.

At any rate, Dandi, your last paragraph says it all.  If I had a nursery to decorate, I would consider adding such a print.  Sounds charming.

Well, what amazes me is that in a city with arguably some of the best Italian restaurants in the world (and if you've been in NYC during the Festival of San Gennaro, you know what I mean), these idiot tourists can't be bothered to WALK a few blocks to find a place, or take a taxi to just about ANY neighborhood?

I can understand in the middle of nowhere that Olive Garden might be considered okay.  But I can tell you that there are "chain" places up here that make OG look like low grade dog food, to say nothing of the mom-and-pop places that REALLY do some special stuff.

I have to agree. The food is crap.

Oh, Kinkade's "art" is crap too, but really, who cares?
The reason they hate him? I believe he's christian.

This is true.  If he started getting scatological with non-Islamic religious icons, they would hail him as a genius.

Not in defense of Olive, but really, have you ever seen "Kitchen Nightmares"?  When you spend time on the road it is nice not to have Sam and Ella as traveling companions.  At least national chains give you a fighting chance of not making their acquaintance.  No guarantee but a chance.  That said if you have time to research restaurants fine go for it otherwise it really is a crap shoot with Mom and Pop.

Zagat--it is your friend.  When I used to travel on a regular basis, that would be one of the first things I would hit, to see if there were any places worth eating.

And as far as Boston's Italian offerings, you could do a hell of a lot worse.  Even Carrabba's or Bertucci's is light-years better than Olive Garden.

Of the Italian chain restaurants, I've found Carrabba's to be the best and closest to the real stuff I had in Italy. Love the linguine pescatore. The calamari's not bad, either.

I live a few miles from Virginia Beach, which is chock full of seafood restaurants who prepare FRESH locally caught food.  I am always stunned at the overflow of cars in the Red Lobster parking lots.

Idiots, indeed.

I don't believe there is a Red Lobster restaurant anywhere in the New England states (NY being the closest I've heard of.)  Gee, can't imagine why...

I seem to remember there as a very short lived Red Lobster out by the Newington Mall.
