It would be interesting to hear Frank's take on this since he is deaf, I do remember he did have some things to say regarding the implants some time ago on a thread.  From what I can remember he wasn't to big on adults getting the implants, infants on the other hand could be a different matter.

I do know there are a large community of both the blind and the deaf who are against corrective surgery but I really don't understand why, as I can only imagine gaining at least partial ability would result in enriching life's experience.

I have a good buddy that was born with a deformity in one ear.  He only can hear on his left side.  He did the testing for the implants and with them, actually heard in that ear for the first time.  He was so happy.  Insurance doesn't cover the cost of the implant, so he is currently saving $$ to pay for it.  It is quite pricey.

I know I will sound like a Dummie saying this....but it's really too bad that insurance won't pay for something that is really needed.

If people only knew how much cosmetic surgery is paid for by insurance because doctors find a way around the system to make it a necessary surgery. If one's eyelids are drooping toward the eyelash line....get an opthamologist to write a letter that it is impairing vision, and it's paid for by insurance....every time.

Yeah, I know.  Since he already had hearing, in one ear, he didn't qualify.  He had the option of going on a payment plan, but didn't feel comfortable with it in these tenuous economic times.

Yep, same thing with hearing aids, and they cost about $6,000 and it isn't covered by insurance.
