Usually one needs to be registered to read if all hell breaks loose. DU has a series of actions they perform to decrease server load during high traffic times, restricting thread viewing to members is their last resort.

If I remember right, around 2004 election, even that wasn't enough, and they had to restrict it to just the people who donated.

That *might* be correct - I gave it some thought and I do not remember one way or the other - regardless - the 2004 elections resulted in primitive insanity unlike any other period I have seen there. At this time, I expect the 2010 results to deliver on about the same level.
