this thread is a hoot.  if you get a chance go check this one out.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x8490017

it seems a bunch of anarchists up in portland started a coffee house, don't like police, and expelled an officer who was trying to buy a cup of joe.

on the surface, not much of a story.  but when that investigative team that is the dummys got on the case?  turns out, that "bunch of anarchists" with the coffee house?  they are a corporation under oregon law.  they have a president and file their taxes and hold meetings and whatnot.

i don't know, and neither do the dummys.

it just struck me as funny.

Red & Black cafe shows Portland officer the door, won't sell him coffee again

Apparently, this is the kind of thing that makes the national talk circuit these days. For my money, the officer handled himself quite well. He reminded me of Galarraga and Joyce in the perfect game "controversy." The cafe owner appears to have acted within his conscience, and within his rights. As a Portland resident, I share the concerns that many have with the state of our police department, but I'm not of the exclusionary viewpoint of the cafe owner, and I don't agree with his stand. In fact, I've held the door for a cop, more than once lately, at my local coffee shop/bakery. Still, I am guessing that the publicity will garner the cafe a great deal of business in the coming months. All of this rambling nonsense post is meant to say that I really don't understand how this is such a big deal to some.

Any insight into that is welcome.

Cheers!

Amazing. I guess the DUmmies agree with Rand Paul that a business has the right to decide who its customers are??

was the officer a minority?
You see, I don't care you how feel.  I really don't.  More importantly, neither does anyone else.  Only about 200 people on a planet of 7 billion actually care about your feelings, and that's if you're lucky.  The sooner you grasp this lesson, the better off you will be.  And since almost no one gives a damn what you do, say, think, or feel, appealing to your feelings when you encounter differences of opinion is not only illogical, but useless.

Yeah, WTF???  Technically you can make the argument that 'Profession' is not a protected status under Title VII, but dang.  If the cop has any minority features or even a particular religious affiliation and wants to make an issue of it, this so-called 'Business' starts out on the defensive to prove that wasn't a factor and show they had some legitimate reason for their action.

It's OK if the right group of people discriminate against the right group of people.
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

"Anarchists."

What's funny is, it's the very hierarchical authority structure they despise which provides them with the peace and stability required to play their comical little "anarchy" parlor games. Without it, they'd soon be eaten alive by the real anarchists in society, the criminal element.

423. Why yes, yes it was. But since this corporation is being run by hipster poseurs,
and they are discriminating against an individual we are all supposed to not like merely because of his profession, then I guess it's okay.....

318. they're running a business, not a charity in which money is raised for someone else, that's why.

worker's collectives aren't charities.

you seem to think the fact that they're organized as a domestic corporation is damning. that's because you don't understand what profit is and where it comes from.

I'm guessing YOU don't understand where it's from, dearest.

365. your sighs contribute nothing to this conversation. non-profits (under business law) are indeed

"charities" in the largest sense of the word.

i've explained what a coop is business wise twice in this thread. maybe you didn't get there yet.

coops are businesses in which the "owners" primary "customer" is themselves.

thus food coops, buying coops, housing coops, utility coops, etc.

red and black is a workers collective running a business that serves the public. except for police. because the police spy on them & their customers.

Yes, those damned fair trade coffee beans--how insidious!  Get over yourself, sweetie.  Cops have much better things to do that deal with the likes of your paranoid psychotic ass.

371. no one said they're "non-profit". i said there are *no* profits. big difference.

to understand, you'd have to understand what profit *is*.

And now we know how Bill Clinton got over on so many people when he said it depends on what the definition of "is" is.

And Hannah Bell doesn't appear to understand that you can establish a non-profit corporation, which is a different beast than a normal corporation, and nothing so far indicates this particular animal is the former instead of the latter.

What I do not get is how the workers are owners and they are union members.

Do they negotiate with themselves? Do they threaten strikes?

lol

I think it means that they are paying union dues, for nothing else than to be members. If the workers are the owners, then there wouldn't be any contracts really.

The cop hate at DU is strong. I don't get it. I get hating on bad cops, the ones in it for the power, but hating on them as a whole group is cool at DU. There are sane people there that totally disagree though. I just wish they'd speak up more.

Let's see.  DUmp Monkiez go nuts and start flinging poop is Rand Paul suggests that a business have the right to serve whom they choose, but says he would decline to do business with such an establishment.  An establishment does exactly what Rand Paul says and the very same DUmp Monkiez run around excitedlt declaring the business to be within it's rights.
