Quote
DETROIT — Armando Galarraga of the Detroit Tigers lost his bid for a perfect game Wednesday night with two outs in the ninth inning on a call that first base umpire Jim Joyce later admitted he blew.

First baseman Miguel Cabrera cleanly fielded Jason Donald's grounder to his right and made an accurate throw to Galarraga covering the bag. The ball was there in time, and all of Comerica Park was ready to celebrate the 3-0 win over Cleveland, until Joyce emphatically signaled safe.

Tigers Manager Jim Leyland immediately argued the call and was joined by several of his players after the final out. Galarraga was trying to pitch the third perfect game in the majors this season.

Galarraga quietly went back to work as the crowd started to boo. Cabrera continued to argue the call as Galarraga quickly retired Trevor Crowe for the one-hit shutout.

I can't believe nobody's asked the league to reverse the umpire's decision considering the evidence.  Is that even an option?

Anyway, the umpire and his son are getting death threats now.

I had heard that MLB is considering reversing the call.  I don't see the harm in doing so, since it wouldn't change the outcome of the game.

I had heard that MLB is considering reversing the call.  I don't see the harm in doing so, since it wouldn't change the outcome of the game.

Bud Selig chickened out on doing just that.  But, Galarraga has handled it with pure class.

If I was a Tigers pitcher, I might be tempted to say something to my catcher, when Joyce was working behind the plate, to the effect of, "Look--I'm throwing at his head.  Don't try to catch it."  And bounce one off his face mask head-on.  I think that the message would be sent at that point.

A call is a call - good bad or otherwise... Reverse this one for feel-good reasons and you better start reversing others.

Don't worrry - Congress is already thinking of weighing in on this one.

It's pretty obvious from the video that the umpire made the wrong call.
