Frakking Recovery Disks Won't Work
« on: June 02, 2010, 12:55:10 PM »
Over the weekend I'm just making the usual rounds surfing for Japanese amputee transvestite midget porn with underaged harp seals when i got hit with a virus.

Impossible, I know!

Anyhoo...

...the when the comp restarts it won't boot from the recovery disks.

Yes, the BIOS is config'ed to boot from CD/DVD first.

From Windows I insert disk > my computer > explore > click the .exe and then click "Restore Factory" the comp restarts but immediately goes into windows instead of booting off the recovery disks.

Even hitting F10 during boot and selecting CD/DVD is a no-go because the system calls it "Invalid boot disk" or some such.

Except I've used these exact disks before to do a complete reformat and reload. They're those disks you have to burn yourself when you first get the computer because the company is too ****ing cheaping to send you a set they would be obligated to stand behind.

No scratches on the disk.

Like the quadruple amputee said at the Rubik's Cube competition: I'm stumped.

First of all, boot up in Safe mode (F8 immediately after POST), THEN run anti-virus/ Malwarebytes. IF the option is available, boot up in Safe mode w/ networking. I get 90% of any virus problems solved by doing that.

virus is gone

I can't get my legal copy of Vista off the recovery CDs.

I'm using a time hacked version of Vista Ultimate...but Whinedows knows the hack so I can't get updates.

I reformatted the C drive thinking the virus was ****ing with the system too much to restore it. I even used your safe mode trick.

No dice.

So I reformatted.

Still no boot from CD.

F10 and select CD/DVD?

nope

I installed the Ultimate hoping that if I had *something* maybe I could get to the disk through windows but as I said: once the comp restarts it just rolls straight into windows.

I had a similar problem a few weeks ago. I had to load the OS from another computer to USB and then install on first computer. The virus corrupted the D drive.

So, technically, you are using an illegal copy of Vista?

I hear some people still use XP. hm. Maybe it'd be a good time to try Linux?

If he owns a license key for a copy of Vista, he's legal. The hacks just make it a problem obtaining updates.

You can't load a 'higher' version than the one you were originally issued. If you had Vista, you can't load Ultimate. I had to go back to XP SP2 and then update.
I don't know anything about Vista, so I don't know if what I did will work for you, but I'll see what I can find.

I had a similar problem (no prOn though). Machine would load Windoze XP but at the desktop load would go back to the "choose user" screen. There was no way around it, the registry was screwed. Even safe mode/restore was jacked.
I was able to get Win7 Ulti and used it to format the drive, fully, no quick format. Problem gone. Win 7 is waaaaaaay better.

One thing I noticed with XP, it woulden't load CD rom drivers eventhough it would run the drive to load Win XP.

Had an HP laptop last week that I had to restore from scratch ( sp2)  it must have done 75 updates once I got it up enough to get to the net.  I began with a Knoppix bootable CD to get started.  This was the second time this laptop has been by with a tale woe.

Ya know. I honestly think this was the first time in my 15 some odd years of roaming the innerwebz that I've been hit by a virus.

What can you do? Can you get into safe mode or BIOS? Have you run MalwareBytes?

New viruses are smart; they block MalwareBytes/virus removers, CD/DVD drives, commands, folders- all the stuff you use to fix it.  The grandkids have been restricted now because kid-friendly sites are loaded with viruses.  Avast is really good at alerts.

It's not always F10 to boot from CD/DVD drive. Sometimes it's F1 or F2. I've even seen some other function key used (F11?) .

F2 is my comp's BIOS key

F10 is to select which drive to boot from.

F11 would be the recovery partition...if I still had one.

I don't which BIOS you have (it could be a proprietary BIOS), but in there, one should also be able to select the boot device order.

How old is this laptop and if it's over two years old, have you ever ran a lens cleaner in the cd/dvd drive?? If not, why not?? If so, then it's possible the drive has just gone out.

You deleted the recovery partition ?

*smack* BAD boy.

If it still existed there are methods of forcing the system to boot from it.

If you have a HP/crapaq machine - they will send you a recovery disk set for that model - but last time I had to order one in it cost $100. Which is probably more than the cost of the replacement OS. Now you may be able to convince the manufacturer that the recovery set you got was a bad copy when you made it and that this is the first time you've tried running it and so on to wheedle a freebie (yes, this has worked for me in the past).

If the recovery program starts to run and then dies - you may need to redo the hardware tattoo.

You can try using another machine to make a image of the first disc and reburning it (check to make sure the disc will actually boot in another machine first (the recovery program won't be allowed to run because of a missing hardware tattoo), but if that first recovery CD is shagged to the point it won't boot from it - your options are limited.

Already have CD/DVD as first boot drive.
When the `puter is going through the initial POST with a disc in the CD/DVD drive, do you see the drive's access LED blinking? Making sure the BIOS POST *IS* really trying to access the DVD/CD drive. Do you have an older O.S. CD say XP that is bootable? If the XP CD boots then scratches or none, your Vista DVD is toast. I have seen Vista boot DVD's do some real funky shit. Go back into your BIOS and remove the entries for additional boot devices leaving only the CD/DVD drive.  I have gone as far as pulling the power cable off the HARD Drive - forcing a boot from the CD/DVD drive or nothing. If it still fails, your Vista disc is whole wheat, slightly browned with butter and strawberry jam.
Oh, you may try to read a different DVD, movie or anything. I have experienced DVD drives lose the ability to read DVD discs yet continue to read CD discs
