Can you guys explain your flag thing to this Brit?

I've always been slightly confused by it.

I've seen many threads on this site about the American flag, seen it prettily wafting away, nicely backlit in various movies, stuff like that. You all seem to really, really like it.

Now... the Union Jack...:

(ugly looking thing. I've never liked it...)

... is a bit of a figure of fun in the UK. You're much more likely to see it on baseball boots or T-shirts or coloured in wrong in the UK. Nobody "respects" it. It doesn't really symbolise, to me, a set of ideas, but stands as a psychic place holder for "those guys over there, you know, the black pudding eating bumbling jokey guys that sing "always look on the bright side of life" at the drop of a hat."

Its sort of silly. Maybe that's because British people are!

What we have instead is the royal family. But... we don't really take THEM very seriously, either. We do think setting fire to them is probably bad, I guess.

I genuinely don't understand what you're thinking when you think about your flag.

Can you tell me?

I'm not saying it's a bad thing. I just don't think we really have an equivalent over here.

sure thing, governor...

see, that flag is the reason you are posting your complaint in english today.  sprechen sie deutsches?  you would if it wasn't for that flag.

if it wasn't for that flag, the one you "don't understand what you're thinking when you think about" things...  that flag that saved your ass from speaking german for all of your life, that flag that probably is the reason you are even alive today...

yeah, that flag you sorry f'ing limey piece of shit.

that flag that you should bow down to every day.  that flag that every real american is proud of every day, especially on this memorial day weekend.

yeah, that flag.   we love that flag.  it means truth and freedom and liberty.  all of the shit you get to live now, because of that flag.  without that flag?  you would be f'ked today.  understand that, asshole.

that's what we think about that flag...

Most English seem to really like the flag during the World Cup.. Find any World cup image on the web, and England's flag will be all over the place.

So much so that new laws passed have forbidden taxis and other public vehicles from flying them out of their windows.  - http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/surrey/8709173.stm

And as for those flag waving English -- http://www.google.com/images?hl=en&q=england%20world%20cup%20flag&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi

Well blimey you limey, you're the equivalent of an American democrat. German, Japanese, Russian, Chinese, Korean, Arabic, any of those languages tickle your fancy? I hope you find one you like because you'll be speaking it one day.
“The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948

"America is like a healthy body and its resistance is threefold: its patriotism, its morality, and its spiritual life. If we can undermine these three areas, America will collapse from within."  Stalin

Isn't the Union Jack the new flag of Islam?
Come to think of it, unions do create jobs. Companies have to hire two workers to do the work of one.

Muslims comprise just under 3% of the population of Britain, so I'd say not.

But they appear to have about 97% of the political power.
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

If I see the flag when I am all serious and its quiet I think about a lot of things like veterans and liberty, I might get choked up, a pit in my stomach and glassy eyed and melancholy - however thats spelled.

Our flag means for something, it represents something noble.

Probably why Barack H Obama doesn't like them. Notice his speech at the tar balls, no flsg, notice his last press conference, no flags.

That's the correct spelling.  No strikeout necessary.

"Timid men prefer the calm of despotism to the tempestuous sea of Liberty." - Thomas Jefferson

"All you have to do is look straight and see the road, and when you see it, don't sit looking at it - walk!" -Ayn Rand

It might appear that way from the US, but that's not the way it is.  Baroness Warsi is actually the most senior muslim politician yet she doesn't run a department of state. Not saying that elements of the muslim community aren't a problem, but to liken it to having 97% of the power is rather like me assuming that the US is defined by Detroit and the Folsom Street Fair. Just because something exists and makes the news doesn't mean it is widespread.

This for once should be a learning opportunity for the lurkers here. The reason why we love our country and our flag is simple. It's the difference between SUBJECT and CITIZEN that makes us love our flag as the symbol of our country because we have the freedom to. Unlike your country where you can not even fart in the wrong key towards anyone without the government regulating the time and distance you can do it  in.

Zix, you'll just never get it, so no, we can't explain it in terms that would make sense to you.  In your tradition the national flag is roughly the equivalent of the contenders' towels in a boxing match, used to signify the forced change in title of ships when one side has had enough, which was usually the French until you ran into our derisively-nicknamed "Fir-built frigates" like the USS Constitution in the War of 1812's frigate battles.  To you, the Star-Spangled Banner flying bravely after a night of bombardment at Ft. McHenry was just an indication that your mortar and rocket aim wasn't quite what you wanted in accuracy, but to us it was ever so much more than that, and you simply would not ever get it.

The closest equivalent you really have is the military tradition of safeguarding the regimental colors at all costs, down to the life of the last man standing.  Of course so few Englishmen currently in public life have actually served their country's military with devotion, vise time-serving in unimportant peacetime duties, that the example is no longer really meaningful for you, particularly considering you are apparently a Progressive buffoon who views the world through the lens of Monty Python silliness in the first place.

And I mean no insult to the good and true Brits who remain, imperiled with extinction as they sometimes seem to be, such as our own beloved Bijou or the 'Foot, horse and marine' serving almost thanklessly in far-flung corners of the world to uphold the right.

No Zix, you just wouldn't understand.
