Gary Coleman, dead at 42

Coleman had been hospitalized in Provo, Utah since Wednesday, May 26, after suffering what his family called "a serious medical problem."

As RadarOnline.com previously reported, Coleman had slipped into a coma and was on life support after suffering an intracranial hemorrhage.

He was pulled of life support Friday morning and later passed away. His wife Shannon Price and her father were at the hospital Friday.

The Illinois native's death marks the end of a long, sad road for the diminutive Diff'rent Strokes star, who struggled professionally and financially as his fame and fortune diminished since the show went off the air in 1986.

Well, no.  I don't actually believe in TV show or movie curses per se.  Being a Christian, I think we're all cursed with the worst curse imaginable anyway.  But it's kind of uncanny how bad things happen to certain groups of people.

Seems like he had illness after illness.  That's a hard way to live.  Such a short life.  RIP.

I forget what his physical problems were, but I think he was lucky to live as long as he had because of them. I wonder who's next?? Art Linkletter, Gary Coleman, and ??????  They say that it all comes in threes.

Now for a story - Coleman inspired me.

I don't remember him much for Different Strokes, I didn't really pay the series much mind. I thought it kinda sucked actually. But I do remember reading an article about his addiction to the arcade game Centipede and that he had bought his own. ( things one can do with Hollywood bucks )

Ever since then I wanted an arcade machine. But I was a poor city kid during the 80's, and there would be no way I could afford one. Didn't stop me though.

Combining arcade parts, a dead arcade machine, a television, some hand-built electronics, a ridiculously powerful PC, and winXP X64 which I stripped to the studs (stripped to the point where there is no Start menu, or even a desktop) I built my own, and can play Centipede (and tons of other games) anytime I want.

It took me over 20 years to do it, but I did it. And it was that article on Gary Coleman that started me on my way.

Where does Tetris fit into the picture? Back in the days, running a Bulletin Board System, (BBS), from 1985 to 1997, beginning with a Commodore 64 running off of two 128K floppies and a 300 baud acoustically coupled modem, then moving to a 386DX 20Mhz computer and a Hayes 2400 baud external modem, I downloaded and played Tetris relentlessly. I even had Tetris as a "Door" game on my BBS. Do you remember the "Turbo" switch on PC's back then? We used it to "slow down" the computers processor so we could play Frogger without the game starting and ending in 10 seconds.

As an aside, I first connected to the first and new FIDO network in 1985 and promptly ran into my first America hating, President Reagan hating liberal via Fido Net Echo Mail. At the ripe age of 25 I kicked his ass soooo thoroughly, he complained directly to Tom Jennings himself. I did not get banned but was warned several times that I was being "too mean" to the leftist commies on the echo mail network.

So you see, I have always been an acetic ass...I NEVER lost my echo mail access either.
