You won't believe this. (VIDEO at link)

CARMEL, Ind. -- A family has filed suit against Carmel Clay Schools after they said a bus driver was caught on tape berating their daughter about her religious beliefs.

Edward Zimmer said bus driver Betty Campbell harassed and caused emotional distress to his middle school daughter, Rachael, in November of 2008, 6News' Renee Jameson reported.

He said the incident began during a ride home from school when his daughter told another student that she would never vote for President Barack Obama because of her anti-abortion and anti-gay marriage beliefs.

Zimmer said that led to an allegation that Rachael told other students that they would go to hell if they believed differently, something he said his daughter vehemently denies.

Zimmer said that when Campbell heard what Rachael had supposedly said, after the girl had already been dropped off, a camera on board the bus showed the driver telling the students, "If you can't believe in tolerance toward one another, you don't belong here. You belong in a parochial, church school."

Zimmer also claims that the bus driver questioned another student about whether Rachael ever said anything racist to him.

"If she says anything racial to you, I want to know about it, because I am going to eat her alive," Zimmer said Campbell can be heard saying on the tape. "You're a smart guy. Rachael is a stupid little bigot."

Zimmer said Campbell then came back to the girl's home after all of the children had been let off the bus and brought Rachael and her older sister, who were home alone at the time, onto her empty bus, berating Rachael about her opinions on gay marriage.

"Say we're a gay couple …and we go to China … and she would adopt a child. She comes back, and if she dies, that child isn't mine. You can't keep that kid," Zimmer said Campbell is heard saying on the tape. "Or I'm filthy rich and she is not, I die, she does not inherit my money. That's what this is all about."

Zimmer said that when he questioned the school about why Campbell wasn't disciplined, he was told that she was working within the scope of her employment.

"I think a bus driver should use her pedals to get kids back and forth to school, and she should make sure that discipline is held on the bus," he said. "Then if something gets out of hand, then what that bus driver should do is send them to the school and let the school deal with it, not take it upon herself to discipline any students."

The family filed suit in December of 2009.

The school district would not comment on the civil lawsuit citing pending litigation. Campbell, who is also named in the suit, said she had no comment.

I'm a firm believer in the separation of busdriver and job.

A discussion between two kids is just that. Let THEM hash it out. The bus driver had NO business interjecting herself into the conversation. The bus driver should be concerned with the physical safety of the students and get them from point A to school and back. Too many people are using their work platform to interject politics.

Does anybody see the unlikelihood of this whole thing?

I don't know how it is where you all live, but here....bus drivers pick up the little kids (elementary) drop them off at school, go back over the same route and pick up the middle school and high school kids.

Beyond keeping the peace on the bus and preventing bullying....I cannot see a bus driver getting involved in a philosophical/political conversation with any of the kids....the driver is to focus on driving and making sure kids stay in their seats.

The father of the kid is suing the school district..and while the bus driver was named in the suit, she is employed by the school district and the school district is not only responsible for her actions, but also has much deeper pockets, as I don't think many people with a significant amount of money drive school buses just for the joy of spending time with kids.... :uhsure:

The bus driver went to the kids' house after she dropped all the rest of the kids off, and brought the kids....onto the bus where they would be recorded....and had this discussion with them?

She just didn't want to get home to her own family.... :therock:

Sorry....but methinks there is an odiferous stick in this woodpile.....
Just hand over the chocolate...back away slowly...far away....and you won't get hurt....

I don't think so...

It's all on video.  First with all the kids on the bus...then with an empty bus.  You can see that the kid is nearly in tears the second time around.

If someone had said this to my kid...especially someone demanding tolerance while showing absolute intolerance to a middle-school-aged kid...I would have ripped her up one side and down the other.  I would have wanted WAY more than just to see her fired...I would have wanted to see her never allowed to work with kids under college age again.  Intolerant bigots have no right to verbally abuse children.

Would the bus driver act the same way if the child was proselytizing about Islam?

If the bus driver went to the kid's house and had her get back on the bus she should be arrested. That is clearly not "in the scope of her employment." As a society we're ****ing doomed if we can't fire teachers, administrators, and bus drivers that cross the line.

If anything, she'll get paid administrative leave.

She should get paid hospital time if the story is true.

She should get paid hospital time if the story is true.

Been years since I drove a school bus down town Norfork VA.----Ghetto rout.

The only conversation I ever got into was at the end of my line one of the few white students I drove asked me where I was from.  I told her Maine and she told me her mother was from Maine.-----

That was the one and only personal exchange between me and my kids.  Unless I saw blood or people out of their seats my job was just to drive, I admit I did break a few rules with my highschool run, I allowed the kids to play their boom boxes as long as they kept the volume down, and insisted the kids open a window if they were to sneak a smoke of anything.    I keep the peace with the warning that as long as I did not see, hear, or smell any rule breaking, I could live with that.

My job was to take children in a large group 50 or more at a time from point A to point B.  My job was not to become a police man, a teacher, a parental figure.

Say you get a taxi to take your kids on a 20 minute ride from the Mall to your home

The driver overhears your kids conversation, drops them off then comes back, demands they sit in the cab as they lecture them on morals and free thought.??

Isn't this kidnapping?
Come to think of it, unions do create jobs. Companies have to hire two workers to do the work of one.

That's how I'd read it if I were those kids' parent.
