RIO RICO, Ariz. — About 70 parents usually attend monthly parent-teacher meetings here at the Pena Blanca Elementary School. In April, at the last meeting of this school year, only 20 showed up.

"There is a little fear," says Sandra Figueroa, principal of this Santa Cruz County school 12 miles from the Mexican border.

Whatever its future, the law could not have come at a worse time for the 2010 census. Many civic groups fear the law will discourage cooperation, jeopardizing the additional federal dollars and rising clout that can come with an increasing population.

"Our communities are living in a very heightened state of anxiety," <Isabel Garcia, a lawyer and co-chair of Coalición de Derechos Humanos (Human Rights Coalition) in Tucson> said, citing low turnout at this year's Cinco de Mayo festival, a celebration of the Mexican army's victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. "You can imagine us trying to convince people to fill out these forms and be truthful. They don't want to answer doors."

But really, this is yet another reason besides racial profiling why SB1070 sucks balls.

4. Actually, it had more to do with Hispanic voter intimidation and suppression
   
They wanted to chase as many as possible out of the state (through deportation AND making the state an inhospitable place to be Hispanic). Those who stay without "papers" will naturally be fearful out in public and will limit their exposure. Even citizens and legal residents will feel the subtle intimidation of being harassed for THEIR papers. The message: "We don't want you here."

Yeah all the talk of trying to reduce crime is just a smoke screen. The stupid is strong with this one.

Sounds like they pretty much admit that all they want are the votes.

Libs for all their talk would put any group back in chains and on a plantation if it meant power for them.

I bet them Mexicans will learn how to speak English now....   :evillaugh:

Otherwise, they have no business being counted on OUR census, they are not OUR citizens.  Send them back to Mexico, I don't care if they've been here 30 years or 30 minutes....

What exactly does a Hispanic person who either a US citizen, or here legally, have to fear from this law?  If they get pulled over on a traffic stop, they can just show their license and they are golden.  The majority of adults carry their drivers license with them everywhere, so they have nothing to be concerned about  :whatever:

If somebody has an actual explanation for why this law makes life more difficult for Hispanic US citizens, I would love to hear it.  I work with (legal) immigrants all day long, and they are required by FEDERAL law to carry evidence of their legal status at all times, so I really don't see the issue that people have with this law.

Because I did not send out my census report a lone woman showed up at my door.

All she really wanted to know was names, ages, and nationality of anyone occupying the place on April 1St.2010.

Under nationality for myself I recorded Franco-American and for husband Northern European American.----I think she just checked white for both of us.

For those of us tracing back our ancestors the census is a wonderful tool to use.
In one case I found a relative that recorded his employment as  a worker in a bar on the water front, job was as a musician.    In other words I came from a piano player in a whore house.
