The Sad State of a Conservative Organization
« on: May 24, 2010, 07:50:51 AM »
Young America’s Foundation (YAF), a supposedly conservative organization, assists student groups at colleges nationwide in hosting conservative speakers. YAF has a list of speakers that they offer on their website, and if a student group decides to host one of the speakers, the students will pay—often thousands of dollars—to bring a conservative figure to their campus.

To fund this operation, YAF seeks donations from generous donors who are under the impression that the money they give to YAF will go toward bringing conservative ideals to academia. The problem is, however, that this impression is not entirely accurate.

One speaker that YAF assists in bringing to college campuses is Tammy Bruce, a pro-choice, pro-homosexual, feminist activist. If the donors of YAF knew this, it would be unlikely that they would give money to the organization.

YAF advertises Bruce on its website (http://www.yaf.org/SpeakerDetails.aspx?id=260) and charges between $3,000 and $5,000 for each of her appearances.

If YAF’s conservative donors read Bruce’s biography on her personal website (http://tammybruce.com/biography) and found out that their money was being used to host her as a speaker, they would be aghast. According to Bruce’s biography, she is “openly gay, pro-choice,” a “lifelong Democrat,” and “worked to help elect Senators Feinstein and Boxer, and aided the Clinton for President campaign.” If that is not leftist enough, Bruce served as the president of the Los Angeles chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW) and was even a member of the NOW Board of Directors. NOW is a radical feminist organization that states on its website that it wants to amend the U.S. Constitution so that “economic equality” is mandated by law—B. Hussein Obama isn’t even crazy enough to say that! Affirmative action and the “championing [of] abortion rights” are also central to NOW’s mission.

Bruce lists on her personal website George Orwell as one of her favorite authors, who was such a socialist nut that he actually traveled to Spain during the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s to assist the communists in persecuting and slaughtering Christians. Had Gen. Francisco Franco and the Catholics not successfully fought off the forces of evil—including Bruce’s favorite author—, the Christians of Spain would have suffered a dark age not seen since the Islamic Moors colonized the Iberian Peninsula.

YAF should be ashamed for sponsoring Bruce as a speaker, and YAF’s conservative donors should either cease giving money to YAF or YAF should cease offering Bruce as a speaker for hire.

In the interest of full disclosure:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tammy_Bruce
In 1996, the NOW Executive Board voted nearly unanimously to censure Bruce for what it claimed were "racially insensitive comments" during the O.J. Simpson murder trial.[5] After months of infighting, Bruce resigned as president of Los Angeles NOW in June 1996.[6] Bruce claimed that the censure was due to her focus on domestic violence, as opposed to defense attorney Johnnie Cochran's "racial issues" trial argument.[4] Since then, Bruce has written about the dispute in her critique on what she sees as the failings of NOW, and the left in general. She believes that the feminist establishment in the U.S. has abandoned authentic feminism.[7]

In 2004, Bruce argued that gay Americans were not uniformly supportive of same-sex marriage and stated that she respected the opinion that marriage should be restricted to heterosexual couples.[8] She described civil unions as an alternative providing equal rights

Bruce holds a bachelor's degree in Political Science from the University of Southern California. In the past, Bruce described herself as a "lifelong Democrat",[9] but FEC records show she has since 2005 contributed primarily to Republicans,[10] and she has stated on both her radio program and blog that she is now registered as a "Decline-to-State" as of February, 2008.[11] She considers herself an independent conservative

I've read Bruces books and followed her website since 2008.  I like her, a lot. She supports Sarah Palin BTW

Hey, maybe they invite her for the cheap laughs....we laugh at the left all the time.

2 of the novels of recommended reading by the YAC is Orwell's "Animal Farm" and "1984".  If a person donates to an organization because it has "conservative" in the title, well, lets just stick our heads in the sand.  Is this OP brought to our attention for this reason?  If so, point taken.

So if the conservative student group elects to bring Person X to their campus what's the ****ing beef? It's who they want to hear.

If I belonged to a group that elected to bring Ron Paul I wouldn't go pissing and moaning to the donors, I would disassociate myself from that group. It sure as hell wouldn't be the first time.

The complaint strikes me as un-conservative in its very nature.

Is not a part of being a conservative the willingness to entertain opposing viewpoint's in civil/reasonable converse.  You can't expect to change minds if yours is closed. Tammy Bruce is a good speaker and even though I disagree with some of her Ideals she does put them forward in a reasoned and concise manner.
It is said that branches draw their life from the vine. Each is separate yet all are one as they share one life giving stem . The Bible tells us we are called to a similar union in life, our lives with the life of God. We are incorporated into him; made sharers in his life. Apart from this union we can do nothing.

I think that is the point, the people who donate are doing so for an exoress purpose and it is not to pay a liberals' salary

caveat emptor

There's a reason I hung up the phone laughing when the GOP called me for a donation -- As you so aptly noted:

Quote
people who donate are doing so for an express purpose and it is not to pay a liberals' salary

Indeed, sir. Indeed.

After all the OP notes that, "YAF has a list of speakers that they offer on their website..."

It all seems open and above-board. Donors are free to note any objections or suspend donations based on what is publicly presented to them.

I remember Tammy Bruce substituting for Larry Elder. I thought she was a good host. I've read her books. She nails right on.

Yep, that's my take on her also.  Unless you've listened to her, read her books, you have a one-sided view.  I wanted to know her story.
