Lessee, 5,000 ft....3 atmospheres every 100 ft, 30 every 1,000 times 5 is 150 atmospheres times 33 PSI per atmosphere and we have 4950 psi, say 5,000 PSI to round it....and the oil's just blowing the water assice as if it were on the surface......so of course we should blow off all the overburden and expose the oil deposit open to the sea over a couple hundred sq acres. Yes, THAT'S a good idea!

How is it possible that any of these people are gainfully employed?

You're encountered with an undesirable hole in something, anything.  The fix is to blow it up?  Is this what they do to their own plumbing?  

I went over to the Dump to look for something entertaining, but there's thread after thread about the BP oil.  Why do they do this?  Can't they just tack an oil comment onto another thread?  

p.s.  I love it when Adbot throws up an ad for Looney Tunes.  God bless 'im.   :-)

I believe 1 atmosphere is 14.7 psi, not 33....

Actually, it's 14.6959 psi, at sea level....

I think the OP Dummie has watched "Hellfighters" one too many times but never paid attention. One doesn't BLOW UP an oil well to stop a leak. They blow it up to put out the fire. (The working theory is that the explosion uses up all of the surrounding oxygen, eliminating one side of the fire triangle and hence, extinguishes the fire.) The oil STILL flows, as demonstrated in the movie.

Quite right, 14.5 lbs every 33 ft, or 2175 psi.. Still the oil gushed out and a nuclear tactical weapon rthere would act something like a shape charge and cut deep into the botton, and would kill EVERYTHING in the water for miles and as likely as not open the entire oil depoisit to the seawater.
