If they think can stick a tube in the leaky pipe and fill a tanker...

Why can't they insert a "balloon" into the pipe and inflate it? If the pipe is too leaky, cut the pipe off before any leaks, then insert the "balloon". If nothing else, it will buy time for a more permanent fix.

Anyone else have a better idea, let's hear 'em?

Using nuclear explosives runs the risk of blowing the top off the oil dome and really making a mess. To say nothing about the leak being only 30 miles off shore. Tidal wave anyone?

I was thinking that we could get bunches of 100 DUmmies and bind them together with wire like a raft, then jam a few dozen of these rafts into the bore hole.

Might not stop the oil leak but it sure would be good value entertainment.

I was thinking perhaps start 100-1000 MORE drilling rigs so they can relieve all that pressure that is causing the oil to leak out of the pipe to begin with....

I don't know about testing.  Maybe we should forgo the testing and "Just Do It!"  Time is of the essence, life on the earth as we know it is in jeopardy....

I was wondering if any of them had mentioned the all-powerful healing white light yet, or the more prosaic but still useful pictures of hands, possibly in the "stop" gesture, accompanied by visualisations of the oil flow stopping, of course. It won't work without the visualisations.

Use the weight of a long rod hanging in the well to seal a plug at the top of the blowout preventer.  Cut the pipe at the top of the blowout preventer and insert a long rod with a plug at the top of it.  The rod is long enough to supply the forces needed to seal the well.  A rod at 1/3rd the diameter of the well (should be small enough to insert into the gushing hole) would have to hang down a mile to generate a 2000 psi seal at the blowout preventer.  If the rod could be ½ the diameter of the well, it would only have to hang about ½ a mile down to generate 2000 psi.  It’s pretty simple to try.  They are cutting the top off the preventer anyway.  It’s low risk too, and I’m sure the materials are readily available.

I was thinking along a similar line  - drop a large heavy rod in the well, however, every couple hundred yards, weld a thicker rod to the end until it eventually plugs the hole. Gravity should be able to overcome the PSI issue down there. Once its plugged, get a rig to pound the rod further in.

If BP starts pulling the pipe out of the ocean floor, it seems to me that one of two things will happen.  First, the hole that will occur by extracting the pipe will collapse and reseal the oil.  Second, the pipe can be raised to a shallower level where repairs can be more easily completed.
