Unemployment Benefits Incentivize Sloth

Who knew?

Quote
Landscapers find workers choosing jobless pay
Jaclyn Trop / The Detroit News

In a state with the nation's highest jobless rate, landscaping companies are finding some job applicants are rejecting work offers so they can continue collecting unemployment benefits.

It is unclear whether this trend is affecting other seasonal industries. But the fact that some seasonal landscaping workers choose to stay home and collect a check from the state, rather than work outside for a full week and spend money for gas, taxes and other expenses, raises questions about whether extended unemployment benefits give the jobless an incentive to avoid work.

From The Detroit News: http://detnews.com/article/20100510/BIZ/5100335#ixzz0ncHWdKFM

I'm amazed this story ever saw the light of day.

Also note how the additional expenses also contribute. As if taxes weren't high enough in and of themselves we obviously pay a lot more for gasoline and everything else thanks to taxes placed on producers. Ironically the reason these direct and indirect taxes are so high is because our wonderful, benevolent, all-knowing, all-caring government wants to provide things for us such as unemployment benefits.
According to the Bible, "know" means "yes."

Something else that taxes subsidize for the non productive, mass transportation. At least that is true around here.  We only have a bus system, but the bus schedule is not very helpful in terms of servicing the areas where people work, but they do make a lot of trips to various shopping areas and very frequently.

That is what happened in England. It pays more to get welfare than a job. Those who work for the government are overpaid and over benefitted and are threatening Greek style riots if anyone cuts their pay and benefits.

So I say let Labour and LibDems have a coalition and let them deal with the debt crisis that is about to hit. Let the sheeple blame them for it.

I know contractors here who STOP for a week in MA so they can draw their MUCH higher unemployment benefits, then head on down home, making $600/week versus $300/week where they come from.

And I wouldn't even know HOW to file for unemployment if I lost my job.

It takes five weeks to get an unemployment check in TN.  I suppose MA has different rules, but its not something I would choose to do.

It's a rational economic choice on the part of the workers (Or loafers if you prefer), really; if you can make more staying at home and be more certain of the continued income flow, it just makes more sense to stay home.

How many times have I been through this.

Job seeker: "Are you hiring?"

employer: "No. Not at this time."

job seeker: "Good. Sign this so I can turn it in at the unemployment office."

Laid off union workers just have to have the local union sign their paper work.

Of course the union dues have to be paid during the lay off period.
