PHOENIX -- Eastbound Interstate 10 is closed at 59th Avenue after a Phoenix police officer returned fire on an armed suspect they were pursuing.
According to Phoenix police they were on their way to a house near 86th Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road to serve an order of protection.
While en route to the house, police got word that there had been a shooting at that residence.
Police said when they arrived at the home they find an Hispanic male dead. Those on scene informed police that a male left the scene in a white Mustang.
Police then caught up to the Mustang on I-10 near 67th Avenue. After stopping, the suspect came out of the car shooting at officers.
Officers fired back and killed the suspect, forcing the closure of the I-10 around 1 p.m.
Eastbound I-10 traffic is being diverted at the 59th Avenue exit.
Traffic is backed up on both sides of the freeway.
Phoenix police and the Department of Public Safety officers are investigating.
