2217 The Spectator's Fraser Nelson and The Guardian's Polly Toynbee are in rare agreement on Sky News - that the exit poll's Lib Dem seat count is suspiciously and unbelievably low. But how could one of the largest polls of the election (18,000 people were surveyed) get it so wrong?

The thing that is unusual is the performance so far of the Liberal Democrat Party. Previously they have been the third party and quite a long way behind, this year they have been level with Labour or ahead in second place which is unprecedented.  As it happens almost no one thinks that the exit poll is right in terms of translating votes to seats, and probably that's because it can't tell us how the votes are distributed between constituencies.

About 12-15% of the people voted by mail, mostly during Cleggmania, says the Financial Times. Its very possible the mail ballots tilt their way more than todays vote does.

2251 First result: Houghton & Sunderland South: Labour hold seat with 19,137 for Bridget Phillipson. Tories second with 8,147. Turnout of 55pc

  Up to today I'd have said a hung Parliament (no single party able to form a majority) but the sings we have seen in these two seats make me hopeful of a Conservative majority.

even though they had no chance, if that happens in the competitive races, its all over.

As I turn my ear toward the Atlantic, the wailing from the Lib Dem folks is nearly deafening. Everything I have read seems to put conservatives in the lead, maybe <<just>> enough to snag a majority.

The first 3 seats were all safe Labour constituencies. They suffered 8, 11 and 4 percent swings toward the Cons though.

It could be a big night for the Cons.

May 7. 12.00am (WH) In Chester, a marginal seat held by Labour, the BBC reports that more than 600 people were turned away from polling stations – because the electoral register had not been properly updated. As David Dimbleby points out, this is scandalous. It will likely to lead to a legal challenge.
