Quote
In Ernie Harwell’s voice, the South rose again and conquered Michigan in a way no one else ever has.

When Harwell arrived in Detroit to join the Tigers radio broadcast team in 1960, he was an unknown to Tigers fans.

When he died Tuesday night at his home in Novi, at 92, after nearly a year-long bout with cancer, he had a strong case as the most beloved figure ever in Michigan.

He rose to that cherished place through the combined power of radio and baseball and just as importantly his own charm and warmth, which were as steady through the decades as his unchanging Georgia accent.

I didn't want to bury this is the Sports section. You can move it if you must.

I spent many a night listening to Ernie Harwell on the radio broadcasting Detroit Tiger baseball games. I would set the timer and listened until I fell asleep. I did this for almost 30 years.

There has never been a truer gentleman walk on this planet than Mr. Harwell. Listening to him made me a better person. He never said a bad thing about anyone. Ever. Never heard him complain. To define class is to define Mr. Harwell.

Even though it was expected, it's still a sad day.

Thanks for everything and may God bless.

Just heard this on the Mets' broadcast with Gary Cohen and Ron Darling.  RIP, Mr. Harwell.

At 92, it seems he had a long run between bases.  I think it would be better to focus on how long he was with us instead of his inevitable death.

Good run, Ernie!  I hope I'm so lucky.

Yep Ernie was the best.

"Baseball is a lot like life. It's a day-to-day existence, full of ups and downs. You make the most of your opportunities in baseball as you do in life. "
Ernie Harwell

"And a man from Warren caught that one."
