Police Close Times Square for Apparent Car Bomb (updated)
« on: May 02, 2010, 12:04:13 AM »

Police found an apparent car bomb in a parked sport utility vehicle Saturday evening in New York City's Times Square, then evacuated buildings and cleared streets of thousands of tourists in "the Crossroads of the World."

A mounted police officer noticed smoke coming from the SUV at 6:30 p.m., police said. Bomb investigators found propane tanks, powder and an apparent timing device inside, according to a law enforcement official who wasn't authorized to release the information and spoke on condition of anonymity.

An official tells Fox News that a dark SUV was found to have what initial reports indicated was a "failed incendiary device," including gasoline, propane and wires.

A man was seen running from the vehicle, but authorities have not been able to find or identify him.

Is this the third or fourth time this has happened?  With the spectacular job this administration is doing, I forget the little details.

They will say the CAR BOMB at TIMES SQUARE isn't "terrorism related"

They always do.

According to Fox News, Governor Paterson said it was terrorism, but he has had some disagreements with the administration.

NEW YORK (CBS) - The NYPD is checking surveillance cameras around Times Square Sunday as they search for suspects in the car bomb scare. "We're in the process of identifying additional cameras which may have captured images of the vehicle and more important, people seen driving or leaving the vehicle," said NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly.

The FBI is also involved in the investigation.

All City cops whose shift was supposed to end at midnight were kept on the job overnight, and checks were conducted in the outer boroughs for any suspicious activity that might be related to the incident.

Police also said the license plate on the rear of the SUV did not belong to the vehicle, rather it was traced to a man who said it was on a car that he left at a junk yard.

Pakistani Taliban claim credit for failed NYC Times Square car bombing
By Bill RoggioMay 2, 2010 10:24 AM

Audiotape purportedly from Qari Hussain Mehsud, who takes credit for the failed car bombing in New York City. Qari Hussain is a senior leader and master bomb maker in the Movement of the Taliban in Pakistan.

A top Pakistani Taliban commander took credit for yesterday's failed car bomb attack in New York City.

Qari Hussain Mehsud, the top bomb maker for the Movement of the Taliban in Pakistan, said he takes "fully responsibility for the recent attack in the USA." Qari Hussain made the claim on an audiotape accompanied by images that was released on a YouTube website that calls itself the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan News Channel.

The tape has yet to be verified, but US intelligence officials contacted by The Long War Journal believe it is legitimate. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan News Channel on YouTube was created on April 30. Officials believe it was created to announce the Times Square attack, and Qari Hussain’s statement was pre-recorded.
qari-hussain.JPG

Qari Hussain Mehsud. Image is from a Pakistani Army wanted poster.

"This attack is a revenge for the great & valuable martyred leaders of mujahideen," Qari Hussain said. He listed Baitullah Mehsud, the former leader of the Pakistani Taliban who was killed in a Predator strike in August 2009, and Abu Omar al Baghdadi, the former leader of al Qaeda Islamic State of Iraq who was killed by Iraqi forces in mid-April. And although he was not mentioned, an image of Abu Ayyub al Masri, the leader of al Qaeda in Iraq, was also displayed in the images accompanying the audiotape.

Qari Hussain also said the failed attack was "revenge for the Global American interference & terrorism in Muslim countries, especially in Pakistan for Lal Masjid operation," a reference to the July 2008 Pakistani military assault on Islamists holed up in the Red Mosque in Islamabad, as well as Predator strikes in Pakistan's tribal areas and the arrest and detention of Pakistani scientist Aifa Siddique.

Qari Hussain warned NATO that it must denounce the US and apologize for "the massacres in Iraq, Yemen, Afghanistan, and Pakistani tribal areas otherwise be prepared for the worst destruction and devastation in their regions."

At the opening of the tape, the failed car bomb was described as a "jaw-breaking blow to Satan USA," however Mayor Michael Bloomberg described the device, which failed to detonate, as “amateurish.”

The car bomb was discovered Saturday evening after a street vendor spotted smoke coming from a white Nissan Pathfinder SUV and alerted police.

The bomb squad was dispatched to the scene and discovered a crude bomb made of “three canisters of propane like those used for barbecue grills, two five-gallon cans of gasoline, consumer-grade fireworks … and two clocks with batteries,” The New York Times reported.

Police currently do not have a suspect. The license plate is not registered to the Nissan, and the vehicle identification number has been removed. Police are also looking at video from surrounding stores to see if they can determine anything about the identity of the bomber.

I wonder how they're re-spinning this in cloudcuckooDUland. Oh wait, isn't there one there now about Islamic radicals being inspired by conservative tea party activists, via Dick Cheney's secret time-travel/communication device?

Why such a crudely made device though? That alone has me saying....hmmm.

Maybe it was the best this group could do. Wasn't the failed Christmas Day plane bombing by Abdulmutallab "crude," in the sense that it didn't work according to design?

This attack is reasonably similar to one of my first speculations of how AQ--although apparently not AQ in this case, but they're all Islamic jihadists, although not on this board--might carry out another attack. I thought AQ might get its hands on pressurized tanks of chlorine gas, still used commonly enough for wate treatment, as far as I know. Build a bomb, encircle the bomb with propane tanks as here to increase the blast, then encircle that with chlorine gas cylinders...

http://www.alibaba.com/showroom/gas-cylinders-chlorine.html

Doesn't look like it ought to be too hard for them to do. Here they opted just for propane and a blast. I saw some speculation elsewhere as to the possibility that Viacom might have been picked because of the South Park/Mohammed deal.

Cutting throats and piloting airplanes into buildings wasn't all that sophisticated, either. Just really effective. They do seem to be having problems with building bombs here in the US or at long range from their places of greatest security. I've read also that they're not really awash in quality "operatives," if these rabble deserve to be called anything so crisp and latinate sounding.

Now...hmmm...where is there another lawless zone VERY NEAR the US, where enough money could easily buy sanctuary and the time needed to build and deploy some successful weapons? Begins with an M...just on the tip of my tongue...

Islamic terrorists need a "Gaza" for the US, as they now have the actual one for Israel--and even there, fairly crude Quassams ate the best they can usually do--better weapons--missiles--are imported.

Why such a crudely made device though? That alone has me saying....hmmm.

Actually, from the descriptioin it sounded as if it were an improvised fuel-air explosive.

It would have dispersed a flammable vapor over a wide area then ignited t with a secondary charge. The expanded primary explosion area coupled with the pressure wave inherent in FAEs would have been devastating.

Perhaps it was not a product of refined industrial machinery but it was sophisticated in its concept.

interesting. I'm a layman in these matters and it didn't sound sophisticated at all to me. I know I'm wrong though...

Apparently the owner of the SUV may be arrested for this.

Terrorists don't try to scrape off VIN numbers on a vehicle thats planned for explosions and...

get this....

it was non-explosive fertilizer.
