During Desert Shield, we had NOTHING in the line of "gedunk" until we started receiving care packages from the States. We were some 20 miles from the nearest PX (AF compound) at the end of a pier in Abu Dhabi. MREs were the meal in the plan of the day for about two weeks. Finally, they got a DFAC built and we had normal food. Burger King and Subway were unheard of over there. We DID get liberty ypon occasion and were able to go out into town and get some "normal" food. Thank God that there were a lot of Brits and US ex-pats in Abu Dhabi (working the oil rigs) which made life a little more "normal".
