DUmmies Discuss Another Decaying Blue City
« on: April 22, 2010, 01:13:00 AM »
DUmmy OhioChick is distressed about the state of affairs in Cleveland. While Cleveland is a prosperous, vital, thriving metropolis compared to Detroit, it's still a wasteland. Blue cities are a harbinger of what lies in the future for a blue country:

Cleveland School Board votes to lay off 545 teachers, 773 total
CLEVELAND - The Cleveland Metropolitan School District's board, faced with a $52.8 million deficit, voted 6-2 to approve the layoffs of 773 employees Tuesday night.

The layoffs will include:

545 teachers
117 classified employees
67 high school administrators
44 K-8 administrators

These layoffs follow the board's decision last month to approve the closing of 16 school buildings as part of the CMSD Transformation Plan.

Layoffs will be determined according to seniority, contract status and areas of certification/licensure.

The school board deliberated over the decision to accept the district's layoff recommendation for an hour and a half.

Many teachers and parents were on hand for the meeting Tuesday night where emotions ran high.

"The money you're talking about saving, you're going to end up losing in legal fees...you're going to end losing in medical coverage for teachers who are assaulted," said teacher Joyce Rice.

"I'm sick because I am safe, but I can't go in tomorrow and talk to my friends and tell them they don't have a job and talk to my parents and say the faith you put in this school district for the last two years, kindergarten and first grade, is going to go right out the window," said first grade teacher Michelle Pomerantz.

Teachers, Police, Fire and EMT are getting decimated here with layoffs.

1. In a few years there will be a
major teacher shortage, again. Hate to say it but hoping this up and coming generation remembers how fast their under paid jobs can cut and find a different career path. Part of the shortage will be the teacher laid off that never go back but all the very well trained teachers that see the writing on the wall and find a different line of work.

I thought ebonics was bad, but DUmmy methspeak is worse.

2. How shortsighted!
These are the people who teach the children.....the Future.

And the police and fire? They protect us.

The news just makes me feel sick...

4. Classroom size of 70 vs the future generation.
Unbelievable.

Uh, DUmmy, anyone who has not fled the blue cities by this late date is hardly someone to be concerned about.

What do you call 545 unemployed union teachers?

A good start....   :cheersmate:

The problem in Cleveland is CLEARLY that there isn't enough spending, taxes aren't high enough and that bad guy "the Rich" isn't doing his fair share.  Triple the current budget, jack up taxes on all the plebs... uh, I mean "the Rich," and don't forget to funnel money into absolute crap (such as "alternative energies" and free healthcare for all of Ohio and Mexico).  You'll be amazed at the landscape you encounter in ten years time by following this magnificent plan.

My son was fussing again yesterday about the touchy-feely BS in school and the severe lack of discipline. The combination of those liberal policies are making him extremely conservative and awfully racist. His JROTC unit is so slack that he wants to drop it next year. He's embarrassed by the behavior and lack of respect of the students in JROTC.

But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948

Schools should fire more administrators. That is something every school district should be doing. That is where much of the fat is.

Sounds like he might, at any moment, start his own school. Wouldn't that be cool?

Let me celebrate a little DU-versity with this theme (not a blatant thread hijack mind you, just a quick stroll in the swamp) for those who might have missed one earlier in the week:

If you get freaked out by war zones in the U.S. in year 2010 - skip on to the next thread.

This is a very small campfire with mostly unknown dummies ( is there a unknown emoticon like the unknown comic of yore for these dummies?) so I won't drag comments over.  The youtube is also worth a look.

We now return to your regularly scheduled thread.

The mistake on the lake has been the pits of Ohio since Dennis Kucinich was the Mayor in the late 70's and took the city into receivership
Come to think of it, unions do create jobs. Companies have to hire two workers to do the work of one.

That's true, but Cleveland is heaven on earth compared to Detroit.

I wonder how many social workers, regulation enforcers, and political staffers were cut?

My best guess is that it is between -1 and 1.
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

No argument there. Colman A. Young was good for a laugh though.
