US Navy, Marines blocked from reading FoxNews.com
« on: April 16, 2010, 10:26:20 AM »
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/04/16/navy-access-fox-news-web-site-blocked/

Members of the U.S. Navy were denied access Friday to Fox News' Web site, a Navy spokesman confirmed to FoxNews.com.

Lt. Justin Cole, a spokesman for the Navy, said that he wasn't able to access that site along with other news sites. But access to other news Web sites was not being blocked.

"There's got to be some type of issue with NMCI," Cole said, referring to the Navy Marine Corps Internet. Cole said he was checking with the IT department in control of NMCI.

When members tried to go to FoxNews.com, the following message appeared: "Access to this site has been denied in accordance with Navy policy to safeguard the security posture and/or to maintain the operational integrity of the NMCI."

Marines at the Pentagon do have access to FoxNews.com. But Navy members stationed in Europe have also been denied access, according to an anonymous source.

The server for the Navy and Marines branches off at the Marine Corps base in Quantico, Virginia.

Maj. Carl Redding, a Marine spokesman in the Pentagon, said he has access to FoxNews.com but added that it's not surprising to him that folks in the Navy are being blocked and getting an error message. Although the Marines work on a different network, Redding said they get similar error messages all the time when trying to log onto legitimate Web sites.

"It's the nature of the network," Redding told Fox News, adding that he believes the blocked access is not intentional.

"Nature of the network"?  AYFKM?  I'm not the biggest IT geek around, but I'm fairly sure that you don't just "accidentally" block websites.

Just on the work-related intranet?  I don't have a problem with all but work necessary sites being blocked, but not one being singled out if they are allowed to do searches while at work.

Am I missing something?

I actually retired just as Numbskulls Mangling Computer Information was coming on line, brought to you in part by the folk at Every Day $ucks,  formerly a Ross Perott company IIRC.

I would have to say thelr motto was Yes we can't(get it right).

ETA NMCI was a resource redistribution scheme but what really got redistributed was vast sums of taxpayer money.  Boondogle is another word for NMCI.  I have heard there are places which still have legecy systems running because NMCI can't get things right

I missed that.  A few years ago I did two days of prn work at one hospital that had access.  Appeared to be a huge time-waster and distraction for staff.

I'm more surprised they can browse the internet at work.  If so, then I agree blocking access to a specific MSM news site or type of news site is wrong.

Maybe they didn't want the Navy and Marine folks to see the story about the Navy wanting to name a ship after John Murtha.

Like nobody in the Navy or Marines reads the Navy Times, which is where the story originated.

Yeah, why don't you try to get on a website to find specifications on class 25 bearings........ball, shaft....blah, blah.

Fox news works on this computer at the moment, shit happens.

NMCI=No More Computer Information.

Yeah it's the biggest waste of money I've ever seen in the Navy, it actually makes less sense than the USAF resealing a parking lot on Sat, and then tearing the parking lot out on Mon. :thatsright:

It's happened to me on occasion from both the Misawa network, and the Scott network.  I think Fox must have a differant "classification" or something because it's the only big media site that it ever happens to.
