Polish president and wife among '87 confirmed dead' as plane crashes in Russia

 Polish president Lech Kaczynski and his wife Maria have been killed after their plane  crashed on approach to Smolensk airport in western Russia.

A Polish official at the airport said there were no survivors.

Early reports are indicating that 87 people were on board.

The crash occurred about 1.5 km from Smolensk airport in foggy conditions.

They were headed to a memorial for the victims of the Katyn (sp?) massacre in 1940, where Soviet troops exectued tens of thousands of captured Polish military officers.  The plane was trying to land in what is being described as "thick fog."

Death toll is up to about 132 now. Quite a few legislators, state department officials, national security people, heads of military, etc.

Terrible accidents do happen. While I don't want to join the ranks of conspiracy types, I am reminded of Russian adventurism in Georgia...AND the Russian poisoning of the Georgian president.

Putin is fighting the cold war all over again. Obama is oblivious to it. But Pooty toot wants his satellite/slave nations back in the fold again.  

With Russia's recent history of belligerence...can anyone blame the conspiracy types?

Such a tragedy to wake up too this morning :(  Thoughts with the families and people of Poland on their loss.

Speaking of, has our Dear Leader Numbnuts expressed condolences on behalf of the American people to Poland ?  Or will Sarah Palin beat him to it with her facebook entry?
