Too much power concentrated always leads to bad things.
Conservative ideology concerning government--as it relates to the individual citizen--at its core speaks to decentralized power...but you can't have welfare and pensions and healthcare without imposing government over the individual.
Decide which is more important to you.
The only place government power need be concentrated is the military and law enforcement and in the latter case the fewer laws we have the less LE plays a role in our lives. The guard against the former is a robust public debate about what sort of nation we want to be...and as Americans are by far the most beneficent people to ever grace this planet it's not really a matter of concern. The only hints of imperialism comes from leftist assholes who use it to slander the intentions of the Cold War and GWoT while turning a blind eye to the bullying of Honduras and Israel and the destruction of traditional alliances to curry favor with psychotic dictators.
