Yes, baby, I got a letter from my son yesterday!

Nick's still doing fine. He's graduated from his program, still working his job at the prison, negotiating to be out the last week of May and is on a Tom Clancy reading binge.

I'm really happy because this holiday I could afford to order & send him Howard Zinn's memoir, You Can't Be Neutral On A Moving Train. He's looking for a teacher and he will love it.

Nick says the weekends are very slow and that he dreams of real food. Oy. But, he can do 8 more weeks. And I'm looking into graphic arts programs for him here and in San Francisco. 8 weeks are manageable (for me, I guess). I don't expect him to do tell me the worst of it all until he's out.

Trying to nudge him into planning to come here for a few months until he's on his feet. He's not hurting for money but imo, he'd do well to be around family support while he changes careers.

Anyway, even if I can't physically go see him this weekend, something will show up for him. That feels really good.

do look onto labor dept stats for graphic designers. I don't think there are that many decent jobs in the field. it is getting so much easier, and so much is going overseas.

2. Hmm. Well, it has to be something like that.

He has learning differences so anything that isn't graphic is going to be hard for him, he'll get frustrated and give up. His teachers used to get mad at him for drawing in class but, duh, that's how he was trying to stay focused, still and grab what info he could.

The other job he had that he excelled at was counseling at a treatment community. He was great at it but it was the wrong job for him in early sobriety and how we got to *here*. He needs a year to do something else that is a little laid back while he gets some sea legs.

Well, we'll see. 8 weeks and counting.

I guess on Skin's Island having a kid in prison is Street Cred. Where I come from, it'd be an embarassement not to be talked about.  :banghead:

Same here. If I'd ended up in prison, I would have been disowned before the judge had decided on my sentence.

What did Doug's Ex-wife's kid do, anyway? I seem to have missed this particular story.

A long, long time ago I got a DUI and did a few days in the county lockup. I deserved it. Drinking and driving is insane. When I got out my parents and 2 brothers were there. They gave me a look that I'll never forget. Like they smelled poop. And I got the cold shoulder for a month. These days people actually throw parties for people getting out.

I've been lucky. The one time I was in jail was when I was taking a guy to the brig at Bangor when he got 30 days on ice for assaulting a petty officer.

But when my sister went to jail a year and a half or so ago for DV, my mom let her sit there for 48 hours before bailing her out. Something with which I heartily concurred.

It's kind of hard to tell that poor, stupid Beth is talking about a convict in the slammer for felony drug possession. It sounds more like he's finishing up his MBA. And now she's inviting him to pile into the camper with her, and poor old mom, and the two big smelly dogs. By the way, when did prison inmates start "negotiating" when they would get out?


But there are some dark clouds on the horizon. Apparently ol' Nick has inherited his mother's intelligence, as well as her affinity for drugs:

I never did anything major stupid or worse  as a kid, my dad was a corrections officer at the county jail.  The one time an officer picked me up, for trespassing on undeveloped land after I had been warned,  he took me home instead of jail.  Jail might have been better.

Vagabond, why you terrible juvenile delinquent!!!  Trespassing on undeveloped land???  How could you?  Oh wait, that's how I spent most of my childhood. 

Nothing is going to end well for Nick.  He can't handle anything more advanced than "Pat the Bunny" picture books.  Doesn't sound real employable.  I say he backslides faster than Scott Weiland.

If he has learning issues and was raised by that damaged and rudderless ding-dong, it's no wonder he tried drug crime without thinking through the consequences...and also no wonder he couldn't even do that right.

It's very unlikely that poor, stupid Beth has ever heard of Tom Clancy. Remember, she is the DUmbest person on all the internets. If she knew anything about Clancy, she might see something squirrelly in giving an avid Clancy reader a book by that commie traitor Zinn. But again, Beth is the DUmbest person on all the internets.
