I got offered a Census job--and I rejected it. Here's why.
   
I've been out of work since July and have been on unemployment since then. For more than 20 years, I have always worked in an office. I know how to use both Macs and PCs. I know how to file and sort, etc. I took the Census exam and passed with a perfect score--and, of course, indicated exactly the type of work experience I have. I also live in a very economically depressed neighborhood with a very high rate of poverty and a low level of education; I'm doubtless one of the few residents who has any kind of college education at all, and I have a master's degree. You'd think they'd be on the phone to me pronto, offering me an office job, right?

Well, I got called just this morning and offered a job as an enumerator--yeah, going door to door. The job would pay $15.25 per hour, and I'd be working 30 hours a week for 6 to 8 weeks. They wanted to know right away whether I'd take it. No time to decide.

I had to say no. This job would pay me little more than I am currently getting every week in my unemployment check--and it would last only 6 to 8 weeks, and at the end of it I probably wouldn't be eligible for unemployment again. Even if I were, it would have to be for way less than I am currently receiving.

I have a master's degree and 20-plus years' experience in an office environment, I pass the exam with flying colors in one of the most economically depressed urban neighborhoods in the country, and the best they can offer me is a 6- to 8-week job pounding the pavement?

This is a farce.

I want to work, but I can't afford to work a temp job that lasts only for a few weeks. I literally cannot afford to. I guess I will have to tell unemployment I rejected a job offer, but I honestly don't think I could have afforded to accept it. And frankly, I think it's an insult that this is the best offer I got. Am I being unreasonable?

Here's the real reason why.

I wonder how many census takers will turn in 1,000+ miles per day on their mileage reports?

Hey, 50 cent per mile/per day plus 20 hours per day at 15.25 per hr....that's over $800 a day...times 5 days a week = $4,000.00+ a week ....and what do you know. We're getting pretty close to what DUmmies think they're worth.

What a dumbass. By refusing the job, her benefits are now at risk of being cut off permanently. By taking the temporary job, she could have picked up UI again when it ended, and if she picked up another 12 weeks of work somewhere, could have qualified for another year of unemployment eligibility.

Somehow....there are lots and lots of holes in this little tale. What a surprise.

Runnin' Buddy's husband is retired and he is working for the census, cause the pay is good and he wanted something to do, part time.

He has a Bachelor's Degree in Business, owned his own engineering headhunting business for years, a Navy vet, passed the test with a perfect score. He was called up immediately last year.

Now on his 3rd round of working for them....and has been in an office the entire time. He was never even asked if he wanted to be out going door to door. First time around, he was overseeing the door to door stuff. Don't know what he's doing for them now.

Guess the difference between a dummie and a conservative, is the conservative wants to do something with their time other than watch tv and eat cheetos.

No shit.  I remember doing "landscaping" for 5 months, 12 hours a day, until I found something better to feed my family.  That was back in 93 after I left active duty the first time.

This is the kind of shit that ticks me off.  This guy is basically saying he's "too good" to be a door-to-door head counter.  Why did he even bother taking the test?  He just wasted everyone's time.  

My husband's employee was at the casino with his girlfriend a couple weeks ago.  He over heard a couple talking about their job situation.  They said they make more on unemployment then they would in any other job.  Kicker?  They were playing SLOTS during that conversation.

Nice to know that unemployment dollars are being spent in the slot machines.

We each have to make our decisions based on individual circumstances. I don't think this circumstance is right for me, and I admit to being disappointed. I know some of you think I must've been born with a silver spoon in my mouth to have this attitude. I assure you, I wasn't. I wasn't born rich, and my education was not paid for by Mums and Daddums. I wouldn't even have the education or experience I have without a lot of help from a lot of sources, the government included.

As it stands, I am coming to the conclusion that I am unlikely to find work in my field ever again in my lifetime, and that I may have to go back to school. When I do, it will again be a proposition I need to find financing for, because I don't have the savings blah blah blah But i'll do it in a field that shows significant job growth, can't be outsourced, and gives me the feeling I'm making a positive difference in people's lives. Underwater basketweaving, counseling, or social work.
