This is England. But its been Liberal far longer than here. So many laws have been passed that anyone can be declared a criminal at any time. This law is an animal rights law: No animal can be sold to children under 16.

Her offence was to unwittingly sell a goldfish to a 14-year-old boy taking part in a trading standards 'sting'.

At most, pet shop owner Joan Higgins, 66, expected a slap on the wrist for breaking new animal welfare laws which ban the sale of pets to under-16s.

Instead, the great-grandmother was taken to court, fined £1,000, placed under curfew - and ordered to wear an electronic tag for two months.

The punishment is normally handed out to violent thugs and repeat offenders.

The prosecution of Mrs Higgins and her son Mark is estimated to have cost taxpayers £20,000 and has left her with a criminal record.

Interesting that the Animal Rights folk went after a small business and ignores the Puppy and Kitty mills that make big bucks.

The sad fact is that the US is headed in that direction. There are almost enough laws out there to make one a felon, even though the crime was classified as a minor misdemeanor many years ago.  If one thinks about this, in depth, it's a good way to circumvent the 2nd Amendment, Make people felons and they can no longer own/ acquire guns without many hoops to jump through.

An adult should know better than to sell something as serious as goldfish to minors.  If she had simply performed oral sex on him, one could understand and forgive that... but GOLDFISH!  That's crossing line.

Y'all forget this old lady was SET UP by the police and who knows who.   Like when we send a 20 year old into a bar and they are served a drink.   Pure entrapment, really nasty business.

Look under the table on this one, someone will benefit from the shop owners arrest and possible loss of a living.  While everyone is distracted by the age of the woman and the Crime she committed, few are asking who benefits, who wants her out of business.   

So like a good old British mystery on the BBC, was it family trying to take over the business, a Realtor agent that wants her shop gone for a client willing to pay more rent, was she a threat to the Vicars wife when she found out she was skimming off the profits from a Saturday Jumble Sale.?
