I refuse to buy a new vacuum until they invent a riding one.

Seriously, everyone I know loves theirs. Have you check consumer reports? I'm a member and here's what it says (you have to pay for access) They ranked the Dyson pretty far down the list. It got a 62 out of 100 as opposed to the Kenmore below that got a 75.

Best uprights for most:

• Kenmore (Sears) Progressive with Direct Drive 35922 , $300, CR Best Buy
• Kenmore (Sears) Progressive with Direct Drive 36932 , $350


Both Kenmores are top performers. Also consider the lower-priced Hoover WindTunnel Bagless U5753-900 if you're willing to accept less airflow, more noise, lower brand reliability for uprights, and--as with the Kenmore 36932--emptying a bin.   

If less weight is worth some trade-offs:

• Riccar SupraLite RSL3 , $330
• Hoover Tempo Widepath U5140-900 , $60
• Hoover WindTunnel Supreme U5458-900 , $130
• Hoover EmPower U5262-910 , $100

The 9-pound Riccar is lightest; also consider the Riccar Supralite RSL4 for its superb carpet cleaning. The Hoovers offer the most value and performance, and the Hoover EmPower folds, though there are more reliable upright brands.

We bought a vacuum cleaner about a year ago.  We looked at Dyson's and the reviews we found said they aren't that great.  We went with a suggestion from Consumer Reports for a Kenmore.  I'll get you the model if you're interested.  The thing is ugly personally, but it's A W E S O M E!  It has sensors that detect when the carpet is clean enough - if you put the effort into cleaning a room until the LED is green anywhere the vacuum is in the room, you'll notice how clean the room is.

I don't own one, but I have heard from one source that they are not "all that", they are overpriced.

And yet, another source has said that it is great (this would be the model for pet hair).

So, I don't know, personally.

My husband bought us a Kirby a few months back, and he traded in my Hoover for it   Needless to say, he is the one that uses the   Kirby.

I had my own cleaning business cleaning houses, and I got to sample just about every vacuum on the market, which is why I didn't want to even fool with a Kirby (it does work very good, but it is a complete PITA to use) and I prefer the Hoover over all of them. This was before the Dyson, though.

My Hoover had the same mechanism, and that lighting device is not a gimmick. It really is accurate.

I need a new vacuum.  My whole house in hard wood or vinyl.  I need a good canister type vacuum to reach under my bed and such.  My mom's boyfriend picked me up a canister vacuum at a garage sale and it's not all that great (what a surprise  )

I had a really good Kenmore canister vacuum that worked great. It got beat up from me transporting it around

I've had one for about two years now.  At first I thought it was the greatest thing ever....now I'm not so sure.  It does "suck" very well but I don't like the hose for the attachments.  We had to replace the hose within the first year because the way the handle goes back into the hose causes it to rip if you aren't careful.  Also I can't get very far under my dining room chairs or my bed (it is higher than a normal bed) with out an attachment which is too big to be stored on board as the front part of the vacuum is kind of large.  There are a couple attachments that do store on board though.  It's the best vacuum I've had so far but that isn't saying much as my previous vacuums "sucked" (pun intended).

Everyone in Snootyville HAS to have one!  My neighbor lady keeps her's chained out on the front porch so all the other neighbors will know she has one.  She keeps her Ford Pinto in the garage.


Get one of the robots.  They do a good job without you getting involved.

I dunno about Dysons (I read a lot of negative reviews when I was in the market for a vacuum) but we have an Oreck and that mofo rocks my world! I don't ever want another vacuum cleaner.

I have one.  My aunt has one. The little suckers are amazing. 

It just smells dirt and goes after it.  I call mine JD Tippet.

Honestly I think I use the attachments twice as much as the actual vaccum.  I can clean anything with those things.

Absolutely the best vac I've ever owned in my life! I have 3 dogs & 8 cats in and out of my house all the time. I live in the country in OR where it rains almost the whole year. Mud, dirt, grass, hay, fur...you name it, it gets it up. I will never buy another brand as long as I live.

Does it pick up pet hair well too?  I'm thinking of shaving my cats so they stop shedding everywhere. 

I just really hate using the broom to sweep every two or three days.

Electrolux vaccuums are all I've ever bothered to own.

I've always preferred vaccuums over brooms, because they're dual-use.

One can use a broom only on hard-surface floors.

One can use a vaccuum on both carpeting and hard-surface floors.
