Today in History: Stamp Act enacted, 1765

Heh.

One helluva anniversary. I'm not sure if this anniversary--coupled with the health "care" debacle--should give me hope or depress me.
Let nothing trouble you,
Let nothing frighten you.
All things are passing;
God never changes.
Patience attains all that it strives for.
He who has God lacks nothing:
God alone suffices.

Don Cook's book, The Long Fuse, has an excellent summary of the Stamp Act and it's effect on the English colonies.  Here is part of it.
Quote
In March, the Stamp Act is passed by the English Parliament imposing the first direct tax on the American colonies, to offset the high costs of the British military organization in America. Thus for the first time in the 150 year old history of the British colonies in America, the Americans will pay tax not to their own local legislatures in America, but directly to England.

Under the Stamp Act, all printed materials are taxed, including; newspapers, pamphlets, bills, legal documents, licenses, almanacs, dice and playing cards. The American colonists quickly unite in opposition, led by the most influential segments of colonial society - lawyers, publishers, land owners, ship builders and merchants - who are most affected by the Act, which is scheduled to go into effect on November 1.

Took about 10 years to get the people really fired up.....2020 Pinky, we take over the world.

It was just a bunch of white greedy slave owners who didn't want to pay their fair share of taxes. All their wealth was stolen from the natives anyway. [/dump mode]

I may not lock my doors while sitting at a red light and a black man is near, but I sure as hell grab on tight to my wallet when any democrats are close by.

Many revolutions, resistance, and revolts were a work of a few people.

Tell us, grampy Ptarmy, how many were involved in the Great Ptarmigan Uprising?   :-)

It took a few ptarmigans to rise up against the bunnies. It took a few greedy bunnies to start the Great Ptarmigan/Rabbit War.

You didn't see anything. Move along! I am no self-hater just because my genus is Lagopus. Yes, Lagopus means "rabbit" or "hare" feet.
