Lesbian teen back at Miss. school after prom flap

By SHELIA BYRD, Associated Press Writer Shelia Byrd, Associated Press Writer – 19 mins ago

JACKSON, Miss. – An 18-year-old Mississippi lesbian student whose school district canceled her senior prom rather than allow her to escort her girlfriend and wear a tuxedo said she got some unfriendly looks from classmates when she reluctantly returned to campus Thursday.

Constance McMillen said she didn't want to go back the day after the Itawamba County school board's decision, but her father told her she needed to face her classmates, teachers and school officials.

"My daddy told me that I needed to show them that I'm still proud of who I am," McMillen told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. "The fact that this will help people later on, that's what's helping me to go on."

The district announced Wednesday it wouldn't host the April 2 prom. The decision came after the American Civil Liberties Union told officials a policy banning same-sex prom dates violated students' rights. The ACLU said the district not letting McMillen wear a tuxedo violated her free expression rights.

McMillen said she felt some hostility toward her on the Itawamba County Agricultural High School campus.

"Somebody said, 'Thanks for ruining my senior year.'" McMillen said.

1. '"Somebody said, 'Thanks for ruining my senior year.'" McMillen said.'

Me, me, me, me. Me.

I agree. Why did the stoopid lesbian make an issue of her sexuality?  Her and her friend could have went to the prom as singles, and spent their time together.  No, she had to make it about her being a lesbian. A fat one at that, I saw a picture of her.

2. Funny, I thought the students would have been pissed at the school for going this far.

I would not think that her fellow classmates would have a problem with her bringing her same sex prom date.

Maybe because it violated school policy?

14. I've worked in MS, TX, CA, OH, IL, D.C., GA, AL, WY, CO. IMO unfortunately some in those

states would have blamed her.

Someday we will let people live their own lives, won't we?

Sure. When are the gays going to stop trying and force acceptance on us?

7. IMHO the school did this knowing full well that teens will be teens and any ire

over the cancelled prom will fall on her and NOT THE SCHOOL. She needs a bodyguard. They are trying to get her killed.

Drama Queen.

An update to the story is that the ACLU is suing the school to force them to have the prom.  http://m.clarionledger.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20100311/NEWS/100311012/-1/WAP&template=wapart

I agree with you. If the girl had worn a prom dress, it would not have been an issue. She wanted to wear a tux. Big deal.

I happen to have a tux that I have worn to several black tie events. The other half thought I looked pretty sexy in a tux jacket, pants, and high spikey black heels..... :naughty:

Your way of thinking escapes me.  When is it OK to force perversion on the masses?  Why isn't it OK to not have the event instead of being forced to bow to that perversion?

I applaud the school's decision.  It deprives the pervert it's show of victory while taking a clear stand against the activist court ruling.

Prom's aren't like they were when we were kids, where you didn't go unless you had a date.

Now days kids go in groups. Some have dates, some don't. Straight kids go in same sex pairs, and they all pile in a limo together and they are all dressed up respective of their sexes.

The school is punishing all the kids to rather than deal with one.

Thank you.  I didn't realize the lesbian was talking about a group "date".  I thought she was trying to make a statement.  I misconstrued.

The school should not be forced to accept a statement of sexual perversion at their prom. Hopefully it will remain cancelled, and some parents will organize a formal affair, by invitation only, for the normal kids.

This is the kind of thing that could end the proms altogether. Its gotten to the point that holding the event is just another day at school because the school can't affprd a lawsuit if any of the kids manage to get drunk at a place rented by the school and then drive home only to get in a wreck. Then the so called events are not always something get all happy over either. We used to have a dinner and a dance at a hotel near the indoor pool and a live band. Then after that we would all go for the night to the bowling alley to roll a few games till the prom breakfast at 6 am. Some of the kids still wentout after the breakfast to play football on the field till they couldn't stay awake any longer.

I know times have changed but it seems like a waste of time to bother having a prom when every year someone hits the news by trying this kind of stunt. Like most here if the girl had just kept her mouth shut and went in with a dress most of the kids there would have never knew or cared. This was about getting attention nothing more.

The school has every right to make rules. Public schools shouldn't be holding dances anyway as far as I am concerned. Let a parents committee do it.

My Oklahoma high school was that way. They didn't sponsor dances of any sort. It was an outside thing, put together by the juniors' parents.

You mean like the teen who caused the cancellation of the once in a lifetime event because she wanted to flaunt her deviant behavior in public?

My high school had four "lesbian" girls that I knew of, and several that considered themselves bi-sexual.  Of the "lesbians", three are currently in relationships with guys.  I know too many girls who would make outrageous claims like this for attention to have too much sympathy for this sort of story.

My thoughts exactly!

Since when is one student supposed to have more privileges than the rest of the student body?

This bitch is nothing more than an attention whore. If she really had any feeling for her classmates whatsoever, she would have relented and gave her classmates a memory they could cherish for a lifetime.

But noooooooo, it's all about her, her carpet munching and her need to be in the forefront of controversy! Everyone needs to bow to my way of thinking! This is still America last time I looked, although it's hanging precariously on the edge of a very deep precipice. I'm thoroughly disgusted with what we are letting queers minorities, and fascists get away with.

The ACLU is nothing but a communist, anti American organization. It pains me to know it has many Jewish members. They of all people should know where this type of shirt can lead! Maybe they have an alternative mission. The people they defend will more than likely be the first to go if there is any kind of revolt against our American way of life.

I think she wanted to make a political statement, pure and simple. She did not have to tell them she wanted to take her lesbian friend and go as a couple.  Many single people go in groups, and it isn't even uncommon for girls to dance with girls.

It's time to get the schools out of sponsoring dances and let the student organizations handle it.

I agree with your statement too. Prom, I think, isn't a public dance, but a school one-so they could set the rules and I would expect a parent committee was involved. AT least they are always here.
I'm just saying I think the school made a molehill out of a anthill.

look at the two issues:

Girl wants to bring girl as date. Eh...let's say a white girl wanted to bring a black guy as a date. would it be ok for the shcool to say no? touchy subject.

Girl wans to wear tux. Is there a law that says the girls must wear dresses? Hell, kids wear crap made out of duct tape. SO- I am gonna say this part isn't an issue.

Besides, I like lesbian porn.  :hi5:

I have a question.

Why the hell even bring attention to it? If she had no axe to grind, why not just show up at the prom and bring anyone ya want? Unless they made a complete spectacle of themselves. I doubt they would even had been noticed. They sure as hell wouldn't have shut down the prom!

This was all intentional, in order for her to make statement!

My opinion also. She had an agenda all along and wants to push as far as she can. Pretty clear she's extremely open about her deviant lifestyle so all her classmates and teachers are aware of it. She and her dyke friend could have shown up and nobody would have blinked. She wanted to test the school district and wants acceptance...just like all the queers pushing this national agenda.

I'm agree with you...this is the part I don't understand.

They could easily have gone in a group and it would probably not even have been noticed.

I wonder how the school even found out about it....or if it was a parent who found out first and asked the school what they were going to do about it.

It's a fine line for a school to tread regarding homosexuality. It is rapidly becoming a protected class just like race, and handicapped. We had this discussion in a CE class I was in last week regarding housing. I recognize that housing is different, but it most often regards federally guidelined loans (FHA and VA loans) in certain price ranges. Public schools receive federal funds and are subjected to many of the same guidlelines regarding discrimination.

I think there was probably a better way to handle this entire situation than shutting down the prom.

To many kids...their Senior Prom is the part of the reward for finishing school and except for graduation is the last big event for them to be with their fellow students. It's also a very expensive event for the kids. These days, prom dresses are quite expensive, and so are tux rentals. The kids rent limos and go out to dinner at nice restaurants. The girls hit the salons for hair, makeup, mani/pedi, tans. Many stores will not allow prom dressed to be returned.

Lots of money spreads out into the community during prom season. And here in the South...we are getting right into it in the next week or so. If you haven't seen/experienced the extravagance during prom season in the last 10 years or so, you don't realize what an incredibly expensive event it has become....and all very carefully orchestrated by the schools to keep the proms of nearby schools on separate nights so kids may attend several. (my son went to 3 his senior year....$$$$$$$)

This girl didn't just get her way....she's also created a sad situation for her fellow students and a hit to the local economy. She'll be lucky if no one beats her up.

Have to wonder what the "rest of the story" is...the part that is not being reported. Is the kid trying to make a statement, get back at her fellow students for some reason, or is someone else manipulating her for their own agenda?

The school sent out a notice that that only hetero couples were allowed.  She went and asked someone in the administration if that meant she couldn't bring her lesbian friend.

As this becomes more and more an issue, expect non-school sanctioned private proms to start popping up.
