With protesters outside, Michael Vick was awarded the Ed Block Courage Award.

The award is presented to players who show a commitment to the principles of sportsmanship and courage. Vick was selected unanimously by his team mates.

"I'm very humbled to be here," Vick said before the award ceremony. "I'm blessed to be voted by my peers, to be here, and this is an opportunity that I will take advantage of and cherish forever."

This is the first award Vick has received since being reinstated in September 2009.

Vick ran the wildcat offense for the Philadelphia Eagles and completed six of 13 passes for 86 yards and one touchdown.

If Vick goes back into dog fighting, IOW he wasn't truly repentant of what he did, then everything's back on the table.  But I've got no problem giving people second chances.

Having said that, perhaps it's a little early to be handing out awards to him just yet.

Vick is an a$$hole, but he did his time. Since his teammates voted for him, I have no problem with it. All the same, glad I stopped going to this thing.
Yesterday afternoon, some dude claiming to be his lawyer stopped by the bar. Said he just dropped vick off at Martin's West (I live not too far from the banquet hall.) I'm just happy he, vick, was in town for the banquet, and not interviews with the Ravens.

I would definately place child molesters, rapists, and those who commit premeditated murder on the "don't give them an opportunity to do it again" list.  Others I would consider on a case by case basis.

This question is not necessarily about Vick.  But when can you forgive someone for such an action as what he did?  Ever?  I'm not the most religious person, but I believe that most people (the aforementioned child molesters being an exception) deserve forgiveness at some point.

In brief, while only God knows their heart, if they claim they're sorry and ask for forgiveness then they should be forgiven.  That doesn't mean they should be absolved of having to suffer the consequences of what they did.  Obviously, we all have different places we determine where the line was crossed where the individual should or shouldn't be allowed back into society.

Michael Vick has lost millions upon millions for what he did, and rightfully so. However, if it would have been a regular street thug or some hilly billy in Appalachia, they would've got a 100$ fine for "dog fighting".

I'd like see him win an NAACP "Image Award". Wouldn't the DUmmys be conflicted then?  :-)

Most people don't realize Vick was not prosecuted, nor imprisoned, for cruelty to dogs. The federal statute had to do with an interstate gambling enterprise, which he was convicted of financing, not how he treated his animals.
