This is from two weeks ago, but it's one of the latest posts in that arena of killer cobwebs, the jobs forum on Skins's island.

How do you talk to your boss about your screwups?

We've been swamped at my job the past couple of months, and I've been feeling overwhelmed and haven't been meeting my targets.

My supervisor has been too busy to give me last month's review, but I've been anxious about my performance and I want to get back on a good footing with her, because I need her in my corner to keep this job. Would it be a good idea to go to her directly to address things, and, if so, what's the best way to handle the approach? Thanks in advance for any advice.

No responses after more than two weeks.

The primitives avoid the jobs forum like leprosy.

You have to wonder if this isn't something that arriving to work 15 minutes early and going home 15 minutes later everyday couldn't resolve.  At the very least, take it home with you and do some work there.  How many other people are waiting to do work on which they will get paid because this primitive is falling behind on the job?  They only think of themselves.

It's a damn shame nobody responded to him.  They probably despise him for taking a proactive approach, and taking his job seriously.  He's taking responsibility for his livlihood, and you know anybody looking at the post just went "oh puke" and exited.

That's what I was thinking, too.

The problem seems to be in "campfire placement."

The jobs forum on Skins's island just collects dust.

The William Jennings primitive should've posted this in General Discussion instead, if he wished for primitive responses.

It they're really that overwhelmed, keeping the job won't be a problem in spite of the metrics, at least for any sane boss.  On the other hand, if it's only the DUmmie who is overwhelmed because he's a disorganized chowderhead, he's hosed.

Since no DUmmies are stepping up to the plate, my recommendation would be go to the boss with a solution for the issue.  Tell them that your workload has been really heavy, explain what you have tried to do resolve the issue and meet deadlines, then request overtime.  If the workload is really that heavy, the boss probably knows it, and will respect him for trying to get more done.  My suggestion would be to do it ASAP if a couple months of not meeting deadlines has passed though, that it reaching into the irresponsible category.

That was my thought exactly. Most employees don't think that way. They think they are doing you a favor by showing up only 15 minutes late, taking a long lunch, and then sneaking out 15 minutes early. Not to mention stretching breaks and lots of trips to the coffee, water, bathroom at critical times. 

If the OP is any good at all (doubtful) goes to it's supervisor and reaches out the supervisor will work with it rather than lose it. On the other hand personal problems (partying) are impeding it's work it will be let go no matter how many promises of better future behavior.  My first salaried job out of college I got some wonderful advice for advancing a career.  Have the boss see you at work as he gets in and when he leaves.

Amen.  Too many employees are of the mindset "What's in it for me?"  Show you're not afraid of work and you'll get noticed and promoted.
