noisy greenhouses
« on: February 27, 2010, 12:52:19 PM »
Okay, I am perplexed.

I'm bringing this up in the Lounge, for those who don't go to the DUmpster.

In a campfire on Skins's island, a hard-of-hearing primitive whines that he can't work well in a greenhouse because of the noise.

I am really puzzled at this.

What sort of noises (that a hard-of-hearing person would hear) go on in greenhouses?

Anybody know?

I can understand why "noises" would be a problem for someone hard-of-hearing, because the person "hears" noise, but can't make it out enough to know what it is, and so yeah, sure, that would be a big distraction.

But what else goes on in greenhouses that franksolich doesn't know about?

During cool/cold weather, they are very quiet places unless the sprinkler system is running.....however, in warmer weather, there are sometimes large fans that run to keep the interior temperature constant, and these fans can be noisy when they run.

Since no one liked my smartass remark about plants screaming in the DUmpster thread, I'll tell what little I do know.

Most larger greenhouses would be fairly quiet. They have an irrigation system or a sprinkler system depending on choice. Their is going to be some circulation fans, but they won't be real loud, because they don't want a strong breeze.  Most greenhouses, have windows that can be opened, and that is done by small motors and would not cause much noise.

The fans were quiet at the two places I've been to.  One was a research greenhouse at the UofI.

I've never noticed them to be offensively noisy....and I'm really sensitive to noise.

If it's a hard of hearing person complaining about working there....sounds more like an issue of just not wanting to work there. But hey....that's a good excuse.... ::)
