Democrats to stage coup in 3...2...1...
« on: February 27, 2010, 09:27:50 AM »
Quote
I hear Republicans getting giddy over the fact that “reconciliation,” if it comes to that, is a huge political loser. That’s the wrong way to look at it. The Democratic leadership has already internalized the inevitablility of taking its political lumps. That makes reconciliation truly scary. Since the Dems know they will have to ram this monstrosity through, they figure it might as well be as monstrous as they can get wavering Democrats to go along with. Clipping the leadership’s statist ambitions in order to peel off a few Republicans is not going to work. I’m glad Republicans have held firm, but let’s not be under any illusions about what that means. In the Democrat leadership, we are not dealing with conventional politicians for whom the goal of being reelected is paramount and will rein in their radicalism. They want socialized medicine and all it entails about government control even more than they want to win elections. After all, if the party of government transforms the relationship between the citizen and the state, its power over our lives will be vast even in those cycles when it is not in the majority. This is about power, and there is more to power than winning elections, especially if you’ve calculated that your opposition does not have the gumption to dismantle your ballooning welfare state.

Consequently, the next six weeks, like the next ten months, are going to be worse than we think. We’re wired to think that everyone plays by the ususal rules of politics — i.e., if the tide starts to change, the side against whom it has turned modifies its positions in order to stay viable in the next election. But what will happen here will be the opposite. You have a party with the numbers to do anything it puts its mind to, led by movement Leftitsts who see their window of opportunity is closing. We seem to expect them to moderate because that’s what everybody in their position does. But they won’t. They will put their heads down and go for as much transformation as they can get, figuring that once they get it, it will never be rolled back. The only question is whether there are enough Democrats who are conventional politicians and who care about being reelected, such that they will deny the leadership the numbers it needs. But I don’t think we should take much heart in this possibility. Those Democrats may well come to think they are going to lose anyway — that’s why so many of them are abandoning ship now. If that’s the case, their incentive will be to vote with the leadership.

Let them do whatever they think they need to do.  It can all be undone in one week.  And don't say that won't happen or that is impossible....it will happen and it is VERY possible.  The democrats will be undone and all this will be for NOTHING.

This fact...this reality...is why the socialists so terribly need a "bipartisan" bill.  They know damn good and well a "win" through "the nuclear option" (AKA "reconciliation") is no win at all.  It is a dead end for them.  Once they "win" and then get overturned, they aren't ever coming back to this dream.

Yeah? How's that gonna happen?

Do you really think the GOP is gonna have the stones to do that?

Even if they did, do you think any legislation passed to undo Obama Care would be signed by Obama?

Even if we get a GOP congress and a GOP president that means this monstrosity will be in full force for almost 3 years before it can be undone.

Considering that any "benefits" won't be seen by anyone for several years, but the taxes would start immediately, is a good thing as far as getting people to want it undone.  However, knowing that most politicians want control, I don't trust the GOP as it is to undo it.

We're talking, they're staging a coup.

What would you suggest we do?  Shoot them?

It has a certain, satisfying simplicity to it...

Hi,

I guess I still have hope.  A lot of democrats are abandoning the ship and likely the party also.  Some hopefully still have a thread of a conscience and say the heck with it and vote with the majority of the American people.

If not, I think repeal is going to be a very popular campaign issue and lots of folks will get elected saying they will indeed repeal the bill and start over with one that will actually work.

regards,

And when all is said and done, the United States Supreme Court, if push comes to shove, will have to option be declare the entire concept unconstitutional.

I didn't click over to NR to see who wrote that, but it's a lot heavier on ideology than reality.  Pelosi and Reid are certainly willing to throw any other Dems under the bus to support Obama and Die Partei, in her case  because her district is so moonbat there is no chance of her losing, in his case because the main shot he has at winning is for Obama to throw everything into supporting him in return.  Despite their leadership roles, they each totally control exactly one vote each, and for almost all of the other 470-or-so Reps and Senators up for re-election, literally everything comes down to what they think is going to sell in their own districts and states.  Very few of THEM are willing to be thrown under the bus for Nan or Harry, and there aren't enough plums to pass out to make deals on that kind of thing.
