Oh my.

What a tightwad, the sparkling husband primitive.

And he probably assesses "damages" against departing tenants (i.e., subtracting from their security deposits) because the cheap stuff he installed doesn't hold up even under the most meticulous of care by the tenant.

The caulk won't cure

We're fixing up a rental we own. We have had two recent incidents of caulk not curing. In the first instance, I gave my handyman some caulk that was outdated. He used it to fill the gap at the back of the counter, where the granite abuts the wall. The gap varied from maybe an eight inch to maybe a half inch, and about a half inch deep. The caulk never cured and we had to dig it out and recaulk.

Now, several weeks later, the shower door was going in. The caulk, again, failed to set. This was new caulk. Bathroom caulk.

The only thing we can think of is that the temperature may have been a factor. The house is at somewhere between 55 and 60.

Any ideas why caulk won't cure.

No answers yet, but one gets what one pays for.

The sparkling husband primitive is notorious for spurning offers of professional handymen with union cards, either doing it himself--and thus depriving a working man of income--or hiring cash-under-the-table labor.

Outdated caulk.  Wow, let me think.......    :loser:

I guess the dolt doesn't know that often any area you intend on caulking needs to dry out for long time before the caulk will dry.  I'd say a shower probably needs to dry out for at least 30-60 days, and maybe longer.

Then again, he could buy some marine or industrial caulks, but that would mean he'd have to spend some money to help poor people have a functional counter and bathroom, so that won't happen.

Sounds like he was doing this on the real cheap. I am sure its not hard to find out what temp/humidity caulk sets at properly, but they assumed they could do it because they are DUmmies.

Boy you got that right.  The rental is empty and he's fixing it up for the next renter, has a 'handy man' in there and won't let them turn the friggin' heat on?!  55 - 60 degrees, really?  Damn.

I got that too. Sounds like his handyman would be an assistant maintainence man anywhere else.

Half inch gap on his counter? Trying to fill it in with old caulk? I bet Al Gore does the same in his slums. The tightwad isn't even ponying up for enough heat to properly work in and with material like caulk.
