Just a proud dad bragging about his daughter...
« on: February 21, 2010, 09:09:58 PM »
My daughter just performed at her ensemble competition on Friday.  They got a '1' and because the piece was so difficult and they got a '1' they are going to state!

Thought I would share;

She is the second one from the left.

Enjoy!

Congratulations. :II:

Thanks!  I can't wait to see them at state.  I didn't get to go to this competition.

Going to state is always an honor, but much more so in Texas where there are so many more competitors.  Your daughter done good!

Thanks Rob!  They are really going to ramp it up now .... state is going to be tough and they can't have the mistakes they made at this competition show up.  I can't wait!

Thanks Iassa!  One of the reasons the new band director we have came to Texas was because of our music programs and how competitive Texas is in the music arena.  He has done an awesome job with the kids in less than a year.  The director we had last year damn near ruined the band.

My little bro was in the all-state band, like 5000 years ago or so.  Man, that brings me back.  We were so danged proud.  As I recall that competition was quite nerve-racking.  I wish her and her band mates the best.

Thanks.  The only thing I don't like about that video is .... she isn't as far RIGHT as I think she should be!

Congratulations, they sound great!

A word of caution, they list their names at the beginning.  Creepy DU'ers will know your daughters name.

Dang, I suffer from the interminable firewall against all video.

From the written comments, I deduce that your daughter is a musician. What's she playing and what are THEY playing? (composition).

My nights are filled up with practice and other duties, but I hope to take a peek later when I don't have a firewall breathing down my neck.

Nice job, KC!

Euph, my daughter is a percussionist and my son plays alto sax.  The daughter, in the video, is playing marimba 1 along with another girl playing marimba 2.  The 2 guys are playing the vibraphone and the xylophone and the composition is 'Metric Lips'.

KC

Edit to change tenor sax to alto sax.   :thatsright:

Wow, two marimbas on stage (still can't see the video). That's a lot of rosewood! Never heard of the piece, but that's not unusual. I note from a quick Google that it's a Bela Fleck (of the Flecktones) chart and the whole thing is a percussion ensemble piece.

It's so difficult to find good all-round percussionists. Most are good on one type of instrument or another, whether mallets, drum set, rudimental drumming, timpani, etc. They can almost set their own wage scale, with cartage, so it ain't a bad gig (except schlepping all that stuff around all the time). THAT can get old...

Euph, it is actually just the one marimba with one (my daughter) playing the high notes and the other girl playing the low.  It is a really cool piece.  They have some work to do on it before state but overall I feel they deserved the '1'.

Finally caught the video. Nice job! Definitely higher level stuff with the multiple mallets.

Marimba, xylophone, and vibes. Cool!

I think they're gonna kick butt.

Excellent indeed. I have a suggestion that might help turn an otherwise stunning performance into a stellar one.

Dynamics. Intelligent use of dynamics, i.e., relative softness and loudness of the music, will go a long way in holding interest of the judges. And it's another way to take a well-practiced and rehearsed piece and inject a little creativity in it.

Please wish them good luck for me!
