Here's what happens when we let the GOP shrink government

We are having problems paying our taxes in Kansas! Our director of revenue, (a Democrat) can't even buy the paper to print out the forms!!

I despise these GOP small govt folks with every fiber of my being!

Ralph Neighbors was 14 when he started doing his own taxes.

But when the 66-year-old Olathe resident started to figure this year’s damage, could he get his hands on a Kansas tax form?

Not only has the state stopped mailing them out automatically, but also the libraries don’t have them this year. And that sample form on the Department of Revenue’s Web site is unusable.

“I wrote the secretary of revenue and asked if I had to file a Freedom of Information Act request to get a damned tax form,” Neighbors said.

It’s not that bad. You can get a Kansas income tax form by mail, but expect to wait two weeks. And then, after filing, it might be weeks before anyone opens the envelope, and months before you see a refund.

So why, when state government is so desperate for money, do they make it harder for some taxpayers to pay up?

“We are making it more difficult,” Secretary of Revenue Joan Wagnon said when we spoke Tuesday. “But if people want smaller government, then there’s a price to be paid for it.”

Yet another irony of the recession. Business is off, so tax receipts are down. That led to state budget cuts, including steep ones in the very department responsible for collecting revenue.

“I literally didn’t have any budget to buy the paper to have the forms printed on,” Wagnon said.

4. The GOVERNMENT is pulling this shit everywhere...why are you believing it?

From local government to federal government...the name of the game is to cut back on what the people need and want and that will get the people to agree with paying ever higher taxes...while they keep throwing money away on criminal bankers, wars and other bullshit.

And your answer is to blame it on the republicans? Get fricking real.

Smarten up, people. Use the brains that you were given. That's what they're there for.

5. In this case, she really doesn't have the budget to buy paper

I am also not aware of the state of Kansas throwing any money away on bankers and wars.

10. Because it is real

State and local revenues are actually down and rather substantially. In response, there have been thousands of layoffs. Sometimes you can continue to deliver service with fewer people, most times, you simply can't.

In the tiny part of government where I work, the population we serve has nearly tripled since 1994 when I started. Staff levels on the other hand have remained flat, at 1994 levels. While we have modernized with application of better technology, the productivity improvements realized do not come close to meeting increased demand. None of our revenue is spent on wars or banks. Heck, I don't think our entire annual budget would even fund a full day in Iraq.

The problem is real. From the inside, it is easy to imagine no budget to purchase paper.

Many years ago when I ran a business, we had to pay for gas to get government employees to attend meetings. No, the money was not given to the employee, it was paid at the pump at the gas station.

9. Amazing...

It blows me away how all these dumbasses on the right are all about balancing the budget, but we can't balance jack ****ing squat if we can't get any revenue coming in. And the revenue doesn't come in if you don't send out the tax bills.

What a bunch of selfish, moronic, asshipes...

11. The revenue director quoted in the article spoke to our county party a month ago. She told us she couldn't hire temps to help process returns or even buy paper. She has been lobbying for months to get more in her budget but the GOPers refuse to listen.

They want govt to fail. Bastards.

I wonder how much the salaried positions under the director of revenue, our the pension program she must fund every year?

P.S. I am confidant that all the medicaid, and Section * money made it out of government hands.

My guess is that it is a political stunt...same as when a county budget fails they say the only thing they can cut is police protection or if a school budget fails then it is always sports or fun things rather then useless overpaid idiot teachers like the OP.

Too bad Kansas (and Missouri, where the Die alte Sau works) doesn't run out of paper to print paychecks for teachers.

Dumb asses.  They can figure out how to vent on their echo chamber but they cannot figure out how to download state tax forms.
You see, I don't care you how feel.  I really don't.  More importantly, neither does anyone else.  Only about 200 people on a planet of 7 billion actually care about your feelings, and that's if you're lucky.  The sooner you grasp this lesson, the better off you will be.  And since almost no one gives a damn what you do, say, think, or feel, appealing to your feelings when you encounter differences of opinion is not only illogical, but useless.

I know that even in the "minimal government" state of NH, senior centers will help seniors fill out and e-file their taxes free of charge.

...and you would think that the "tax me more" crowd would really be able to find a way to pay there taxes........if they really wanted to pay taxes.

You can bet that hundreds, or more likely thousands, of Kansas state employees are driving state cars 24/7. And they enjoy those "Cadillac" health plans that democrat politicians campaign against but award to themselves. And there are thousands of state employees, like the OP, who could be eliminated with zero negative effect. Little, insignificant, inexpensive things that irritate citizens, like this tax form scam, are the leverage they use to pass higher taxes. Regrettably, all bureaucrats operate this way, regardless of political affiliation. The only thing to do is have as few of them as possible.

Democrats always cut where it hurts the most people.

Cut fund to the gay library? ethnic community centers? ACORN? heck no. Can't do that.

Dumb asses.  They can figure out how to vent on their echo chamber but they cannot figure out how to download state tax forms.

Can't you even file online? I mean, I realize you'd want a copy for your records but if push came to shove you could even file from the library. Generally, copies at the library are pretty cheap. You could take in a couple of pop cans found by the side of the road. These people have absolutely NO self-sufficiency or imagination. And wouldn't a decent person who realizes they have this pathetic little waif, unable to afford the $.25 required to print something at the library pay for the copies? If it was a neighbor or friend or co-worker, wouldn't one invite said pathetic individual into their home to use their computer/printer? I just bought printer paper, a pack of 500 for about $3.00. I think I could afford to let a friend print a couple of pages of tax forms. Honestly, they literally LOOK for stories they think make Republicans look mean. All they end up doing is looking petty and stupid.

And as Frank probably knows, accounting college students nationwide volunteer to assist in tax preparation for those in need, particularly seniors.  It's a great thing to have on a resume.

I never received any tax information from the Federal government this year, and I only received a post card with PIN numbers on it from the state. They are pushing hard for everyone to file electronically.

I still download and print both the state and federal forms,  do my taxes by hand, then I do them online and only file electronically if it's the same as what I did by hand.  I always print everything from the online filing and also save them to a disc.
