True. In fact the 'Resistance' in France spent at least as much time trying to off each other (Gaullists vs. Commies) or even informing on each other to the Gestapo and Milice, as they did actually interfering with the Germans. At least right up to the end with the Allies on the ground and advancing, anyway. About then, they finally got ruthless on any hapless stray German soldiers unlucky enough to get in their way, because they correctly figured they'd get away with it.
Tanker, something I have wondered about since I spent the night with a Canadian male RN who claimed to have been with the French Foreign Legion.
----Gasp-----We were in a IC room at a hospital as a family member was on life support. I had gone in to bath and brush her hair, give what comfort I could to her.
Anyway, late into the night the nurse who was Bord and I began to talk and I had no idea the Foreign Legion still existed. This had to have happend back in 1998 or so.
Because of my mental state at the time and the pasting years I only remember some of his comments about his service, I do remember him telling me he got out of the legion because he was getting too old for the physical exertion needed to tramp though jungles or deserts. He was tired of being a mercenary.
By the time the sun came up my daughter had pulled through somehow, A Priest had come and gone giving her last rites, Amazing night, I went home and slept for 24 hours due to the exhaustion from mental anguish and fear only a mother can have.
The Nurse was French Canadian I do not know if he used Riki or what ever on my daughter, he had no problem with me crawling into bed with her to hold and touch her, to talk to her as if she could hear me, BUT something happend to cause her to rally.
She still lives on a slender thread, I do not know if it was science, religion, or a combination that worked.
French Foreign Legion, was this RN bull crapping me, if for real he became the most memorable person I have ever met. If a phony, he still remains the most memorable person I have yet to meet.
The French are a strange people, I myself am 1/2 French Canadian and found ancestors that died in France under strange circumstances before their family went to the New World.
Sorry Tanker, I know this is rambling and out of kilter, I am trying to tell you what happend to me one night, a nightmare that was for real.
The French are a different breed I guess from others, born lovers, artists, scientists and people of very deep faith. Stubborn, hard headed, and at one time sold on the block in Boston as slaves next to the Africans.
We are from Arcadian stock, somehow we survived the French and the British.
Please don't forget our LADY given to us from France, standing still tall and proud in the harbor of New York.
